Tranny problem please help

Ok I have this problem and i cant understand why this is happening, so i have a t2 and it havent been dirving in almost a year did a swap engine and tranny, so when i go to have it towed to my friends house so that we can finish it up i notice that it wouldnt move and everytime we tried to move it i could hear compression, well for some reason the tranny seemed to be in neutrual, so why is it stuck in gear? can anyone help me out on what to do. should i drop the tranny and have it rebuilt ( and i dont feel like taking the tranny out) or should i just buy another one? any advice would help. thanks
