Tranny Noise: Metal on Metal?

Got a weird tranny noise on my 88 vert. I've used the search and though there are numerous "tranny noise" posts i couldn't find one that matches my problem.

Here's what it's doing:

Only happens going into 1st and shifting into 2nd. I hear 1 loud metal on metal thunk each time i go into 1st or 2nd.

I don't have any vibes, no squeaks, no rattles, no grinding it's just 1 loud thunk noise. Almost feels like something is lose and touching metal to metal, but only in my 1st/ 2nd gears. I don't hear this in any other gears.

any idea what this could be? I guess it could also be clutch related as it involves shifting.

I also noticed recently that while in reverse it will do this and the car will start to shake like it's about to stall... no idea if this is related or something else though.

Any help, links...etc would be great. I'm new to RX-7's. I have a manual for the car and that's about it.

TIA

Is it a crunch noise?

Sycronizers in the tranny may be going.

I wonder if the shock absorber springs in your clutch are messed up. Or you might have the infamous loose/broken diff mount.

I second the diff mount. I think Kevin Landers had a easy test for this. Not sure if I am stating everything correctly but I'll try my best from memory.

In first gear go up to 10mph and then let off the gas and repeat several times. If it clunks then it's the diff mount.

ahhhhh thanks for the tip. Yes it's clunking almost everytime at 10mph.

So diff mount it is. Now i need to so some searching and find out how hard it is to replace and how much it is going to cost me.

thanks everyone. i can check one more problem addressed off my ever growing list.

I think Scalliwag here on the forum is selling solid diff mounts. Do a search for it.
