Tranny mod question

I've recently had my 2nd gear syncro bite the dust(actually this last drive I was on), so I'm looking for tranny replacement options on my '90 NA. The stock tranny has lasted 180k, so I don't think I really need to beef it up a bunch, if any. I've been reading and searching through posts and sites for the last 2 hours, found lots of info, but still need a few bits to continue at this point. http://www.angelfire.com/darkside/de...nsmission.html <- From reading this site, it seems possible to swap the gears, 1-4 as well as R-5, from one complete tranny (bellhousing to tailhousing) to another from a vehicle using a similar type II mazda unit. If I'm reading this correctly, should it be possible to use the bearing housing and center housing of a miata or an S4(whether or not I would need to) tranny in between the bellhousing and tailhousing of my S5? If that would work, then would the plugs and electrical connections be the only things I'd need to modify to reinstall on my car?
What I'm trying to do is keep things fairly simple and cheap to have my car running as it was just yesterday. Any suggestions? I am mechanically competent so tearing a tranny apart is an option once I get my other car running(it's not running well, but I've been to lazy to fix it with the parts I've already bought, not because I don't know how ) Should I put up a poll? rebuild or replace with used, or stop using second, or something else?

so, if I understand this correctly... you are wanting to swap a miata tranny in, by just using the Miata trannys guts in a S5 housing???

Why wouldn't you just put in a S4 or S5 non turbo tranny??? they are rather plentyful and would pretty much bolt in without swapping guts.

Have you tried synthetic gear oil yet?

Sorry to take so long getting back, but I didn't think anyone would answer anyway. I've been using synthetic gear oil since I got the car, with the last change switching to Redline(first time using it, impressed by it, will continue to use it). As far as swapping in an S4, sure I could find that, but mileage may be a question on one around here. The question about the Miata tranny, was mainly out of curiousity. I was interested in the ratios it has in comparison to the NA RX tranny. Are the Miata gearsets more fragile than the RX? I'm not trying to push major power through the drivetrain just a little more than stock. Oh yeah, the swapping guts part just sounded like something fun to do anyway
