trailing coils not firing???no signal on timing light

why were you trying to check timing from trailing?

It should have worked. Idle the car and pull a trail wire from the coil about a quater inch and see if you see spark.

Also, the thing should be working IF you have a working tach. Can't have a tach signal unless the trail coils are working in my very humble opinion.
