Tracking down an electical short...

So, I finally got around to fixing my Turbo II after the starter cable had shorted to the solenoid case. I replaced the started cable, and noticed the EGI COMP fuse was also blown

So I started to narrow it down, it draws almost 80A when the main relay is activated. I tried a different mail relay, but it still does the same thing. So I disconnected the ECU, no luck. Disconnected the Fuel Pump resistor, no luck. When I disconnected the FEM-02 connector on the passenger kick panel, it stopped drawing power.

The short must be after the FEM-02 connector. I haven't had a chance to locate my 1987 wiring diagram that I can actually read, and all I can find is the changed 1988 diagram that is slightly confusing since it does not show all the wires for each connector like the 87 does.

Any ideas as to what is hooked up to this connector?

Thanks in advance,
Vince

EGI COMP fuse feeds all those little solenoid plugs on the left of the engine (blue, grey, orange etc) plus it feeds the two solenoids on the ACV. A good place to look is at the ACV. Unplug the two solenoids from the harness (foot long pigtail harnesses). Then try again. If MEMORY serves it also feeds the black/white wire in the six socket diagnostic connector and the black/white wire in the TPS check connector. All of the EGI COMP wires will be black/white.

By the way, that was a reasonable approach you took to find out where the short is i.e. pulling the FEM plug off and trying again. Thereby cutting the problem in half and figuring which half of the circuit is bad.

The EGI COMP also feeds the small ECU plug but seeing as how you pulled the FEM plug off that means there's no way it is shorted at the ECU.

As usual, your advice was absolutely correct. I checked each of the black/white wires at the solenoid connectors and all had continuity to ground. Tried moving the harness to see if it was in the harness, but no luck. That is until I pulled the upper plenum off and found a 2 wire connector that is routed with the idle air (for the PS i think?) on the back of the plenum. The plastic connector had disappeared and the bare connector was laying on the ground wire on the bellhousing.

So, I just finished pulling of out the engine harness, deloomed it and removed the wires from the harness for all the unused connectors. Now to rewrap it and reinstall it. It looks much cleaner, and I also routed my autometer temp sender wire in the harness as well

Looks like it'll be back among the living in no time.

Thanks Hailers!
