tps question
i went to look at my first rx7 today. the car is an 87 turbo II and he is selling it for $3100 with a few problems.
the car has about 150k on the chassis, he hasn't driven it for about a year and a half its just been sitting because he has a corvette. he put a new motor in with his dad at about 148k with an ACT clutch, I'm not sure what stage.
He has two 550cc fuel injectors and two 720cc? I believe that is what he said.
The car won't pass smog and it runs VERY rich. when he turned on the car it stank of fuel and i was getting nauseous. he says the throttle position sensor is out so he started it cold for me. there was no smoke but the car was idling at 3-4 thousand rpm and even when it 'settled' it was no lower than 2k.
He's taken off the smog pump and all the cats. I just went to look at it to learn more and i wanted to do my homework about the problems first. so i didn't get to test drive it or even sit in. he said that for liability issues he wouldn't even be able to let me test drive it next week and I'd have to sit in. It just all seems a bit fishy.
Anyway, the registration is a year behind i believe and it definitely won't pass smog. It has "stock koni's" with eibach springs, some konig rims.
He showed me receipts for the motor that he swapped, the engine is not even broken into yet. I believe he only has the engine motor, alternator pulley, and one other pulley, i forgot. but he removed the rest.
Can anyone tell me their thoughts on this?? anything sound fishy or out of place? also how big of an issue is the tps? I wouldn't mind fixing it myself if its fairly approachable but i have no idea how much a throttle position sensor even costs. The problem is I'm also not even sure if that is exactly why the idle is erratic.
any thoughts and or advice would be appreciated thanks

Is the car clean? Any rust? A clean t2 shell with little to no rust is worth about $2500 so if the engine isn't even broken in yet and the under carriage is not all rusted and the body is clean try to buy it for $2500.00 That is what I would do. You can always ask him if you can check the compression of the engine. You can use a piston compression gauge. All you have to do is take the pin out of it by unscrewing it. Then pull the fuel pump relay, remove the bttm rear plug and use the piston gauge meter. The neeedle will bounce. I don't remember what the needle should bounce up to for an 87. I think 110 and overr is great. Do the same thing with the fron too. The needle will bounce three times. If you don't want to do that to check the engine or the dude wont let ya. If it has an aftermarket boost/vacuum gauge you can put it in first. let the clutch out very very slow and give it gas with the parking break on and watch the boost/vacuum gauge. It has to be an after market boost/vacuum gauge, as the needle get closer to 0 before it would go into boost if the needle bounces the seals are starting to go..
It has been a while so I might not remember how to do it correctly with the piston compression gauge. Others on here can tell you how to do it. But definatley try to get it for $2500.00

well rested,buffet o food
I would see if i could find a working tps at a junk yard for cheap, then put it on in his driveway. 3100 for the car with a fresh rebuild seems fishier than long john mother ******* silver.

he's selling it for 3100 because he got laid off recently and he's living with his parents so i think there might be some truth to that. I'm not at home right now so ill look for a howto thread later but just off the top of the head, does anyone know how long it would take to install it in his driver way?
thanks for the responses

thanks everyone for the reponses.
isntead of making another thread asking about another car i thought id just ask on this one.
i found another rx7 that is n/a but turbo swapped. it's 1990.
i am selling a rx7 turbo conversion. was originally N/a, the body and interior of the car is complete and in very good condition, the only problem is that the motor doesn't want to idle, the motor does still crank and when it is able to hold doesn't sound like it has a bad apex. most likely a bad sensor but i do not have time to look for it nor the money. i am not selling the car with the rims nor the steering wheel or stereo, but i will provide the original rims that came with the car and with a decent amount of tread left. if you have any other questions just email me.
^ that's the description of the car. i'm assuming that its price is significantly higher than the 87s because the newer trim is worth a lot more?
does it sound fishy? why are idling problems so common!?
i also found another black 87 tII that's gone thru 4 motors. the owner said he switched it back to stock turbo II motor with about 80k on the motor and 260k on the chassis. no receipts and whatnot for the swap tho.
