Towing an FC ... need opinions

Will be towing an FC with my 2002 Acura TL Type S ... need opinions.

Acura RECOMENDS (not says is the max) towing cap of 2000. But I will be doing all highway driving. What do you all think? Should I be allright?

This will be on an elevated trailer. Any other precautions I should tkae ?

Remember that the trailer adds weight as well. If you are over the recommended towing weight of the vehicle the it is UNSAFE. Keep in mind that transmissions and brakes are sized for the weight of the vehicle...Towing another 3000+ LBS is not a smart thing to do. There's probably also a fine for this as well, should you be stopped.

AAA covers the member, not the car, so any car can be towed. Just can't go over the membership limits, for standard membership I think it's 4 tows.

To go further distances you need the plus membership.

I thought it would make you feel safer to know that if I saw you pulling an FC down the road with an Acura TL, I would stay the heck out of your way

Dont tow it with the Acura. Listen to everyone ang either get an AAA membership and have them do it, or rent a truck to tow it. It is too unsafe to use a car that only can tow 2k lbs to tow 3k+ lbs. You would never stop.

I saw a Saab 9-3 towing a Porsche 944 (the one that looks like the FC). So, I guess, it's possible. I wouldn't recommend it though.

AAA Premium is only up to 100 miles free. After that, you get charged normal rates.

I'd suggest you get a friend with a truck to tow it.

If I were you, I'd listen to everyone in this thread and avoid towing it with your Acura.

Also, I belive it is possable to get major fines in most states if a police officer sees you overloading your car. I don't know for sure.

You could rent a truck for a lot less than the price of the damage you do to your vehicle. Or the fines you recieve from being pulled over for overloading your vehicle. Or the fines you recieve from plowing into the back of a car when you realize that you overheated your brakes after touching them for more than 5 seconds. Sue, sue, sue.

Plus, if something happens and you need to claim insurance, they'll deny you your claim because you were exceeding safety limits.

If you already have the trailer, do you know someone with a Crown Vic or a truck?

How far are you towing? Call some towing companies to get some quotes (Just don't give them any names and ask for thier "hookup fee" and "per mile rate"). I just got some quotes here in Toronto and it was 60 for hook up, $3/km (-15% off the total ).

So in Imperial and USD, it's probably something like $45-50 hookup and $5-6/mile.

I know the trannies suck in these cars ...

So far heres what i found out

Penske= 950$
Uhaul= 650 dollar round trip .... 320 one way (175 for the truck, dolly, and designated miles + .40 cents more for each mile) however the 320 truck is not available when needed
Using My Car= Completely out of the question at this point. I have seen someone tow a ski boat with it but given the 250 miles of highway I would be towing, I just don't think it would be safe to do it
Towing=250 each way

Let me repeat if the car is an auto tranny you should NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER tow ANYTHING with it. Those trannies are garbage

I am actually going to tow a fc in Fl too tomorrow. I highly recommend a truck with at least a v6. I have a 2004 frontier supercharged, and it will tow a fc good but man i wish sometimes i had a full sized truck. BTW i am towing a T2 to get a 91 pristine convertible. I will post pics tomorrow.

I prefer to just make the vehicle move under its own power and drive or ride it home.

Also, the advice from everyone regarding the automatic transmissions, all very good advice. The transmission would probably boil over and perhaps suffer damage, especially if you wound up going over any elevation change.

I've done things like install a haltech in a car that wouldnt run for unknown reasons in freezing cold weather on the other side of the country with Jacob Cartmill to drive the car home... it has always worked out. If the car didnt have an engine I'd probably just bring one and a friend or two to be able to lift it, it's not hard to make a car driveable, and it's usually cheaper than towing.

heres the writeup from that adventure with Jacob and Seva:
