I have a bone stock '87 GXL and I can't seem to get it past 170 KM/h (106 mph). I heard they could do like 130 mph, whats up?

 

Well, other than just having a poorly tuned car, it's possible you have a JDM speedometer, which includes a 180 km/h speed limiter.

 

your car is probbally old and tired.. my old 87 gxl was able to hit 120 though

 

Maybe start by checking the aux port actuators.

 

where/what are those?

Hmmm. My buddys 1990 gtu can hit like 127 that ive seen. But someone else has gotten his up to 136 in the country. We havnt topped out yet...

 

Generally your top speed is redline in 4th gear. 5th wont move after that.
So you should be closer to 130. If the aux ports on the uim are stuck closed than you would not reach that speed. Also i assume that you are in fact redlining it, if your shifting to 5th before the redline you wont get top speed.

ya that was a realy long thread,
the 6 port actuators are located on the left side(facing the car) of your engine, almost all the way down, located on the lower intake manifold ish. there are two of them and they are about 2 in in diameter. if you search theres alot of ways to test them, but you should be able o push the valve open with a bit of pressure
