Yo,

Well, I've been driving this car since 1987, my Scirocco. Then my buddy Paul told me about his Corolla AE86, and the wonders of RWD and drifting. So hey, I wanted a Japanese car that was rear drive, and driftable. Hey, 2nd Gen RX-7! Cheap and good, voila! So I bought one, and haven't looked back since. The uniqueness of the rotary powerplant and the wonderful noises it makes are icing on the cake.

Your friend at 8000rpm,

Kevin Sproul
1989 GTUs "They should call it spinning, not drifting"

PS: Yep, I still have my Scirocco

You get to laugh hysterically when a "smart" person begins to talk like this:

"Well, you know that those 4 cylinder rotaries have to be re-built every 50k miles, you know."

This is almost a direct quote.

Really, the rotary kicks ***. There is little bottom end, but get the thing over 4k, and it screams, as piston engines scream for mercy. They are so fun to run to the redline, and they pull like mothers over the aforementioned 4K.

And you can be different.

From a similar question / post:

The 2nd Gens of course were fuel injected and not carborated (sp?).

The 2nd Gens went from 86-92. The 89-92 models have more horsepower and tend to be slightly higher quality.

The SE, GXL, and GTU models are very reliable in the drivetrain and can go 200K miles very easily.

The Turbo II is one of the highest quality factory production race car every built. The engines last 140K miles before needing a rebuild. Most people try to buy a Turbo II for $2000 with a blown engine or $4500 with a rebuild engine. Either way - you'r looking at $3500-$7500 for a Turbo II normally depending on the shape it's in. Best way to tell is get a compression test done on the engine before buying.

There's a 10th Aniversary Turbo II model in 88 that's collectible and the 1992 (caryover year) Tubro IIs are also hard to find.

The turbo II is one of the best supercars ever built and a blast to drive. Perfect 50/50 balance, light weight, low to the ground, 160MPH, lots of grip, TONS of bodykits, TONS of performance upgrades, TONS of accessories - oh yeah!!!

The engine can make 400 reliable HP very easily and the 20B motor can make 600 reliable HP very easily.

Stock HP on a 88-92 turbo can beat stock GT mustangs.

If you want to know why I own a turbo II:
blast to drive, seat of your pants ride, great for autocrossing, I can rev the engine all day long and never hurt it, feels great with the windows down at 85MPH (or any speed), tons of performance potential, it's NOT a 5.0 and beats a 5.0, etc... etc...

The convertible's also very cool car. The Mica blue models are hard to find. I eventually want to swap the Turbo II tranny & engine into a convertible.

If you've worked on Mustangs before, you'll love working on these cars. Not near as much stuff that can go wrong and their fairly straighfoward.

Hope this helps.

Thumbs up

10. Looks like a 944
9. Dual Exhausts
8. 50/50 weight balance
7. All cool standards ...like 4 wheel disc, pwr everything, alloys...
6. RWD
5. Chicks dig it
4. 8,000 RPM redline
3. The SOUND!!
2. DTTS (handling)
1. The pure FEELING of chirpin the tires at 70mph on a lonely stretch and blasting 3rd gear all the way through those S-curves that none would dare challenge . . . all with the sunroof up, wind in your hair, and being pushed back into your seat and knowing that all the cars WAY behind you can never top this rush... ZOOM ZOOM ZOOM!!

1. It's a Rotary.
2. The engine is near indestructable.
3. It's NOT a piston
4. You get to talk rotory stuff with fellow rotor heads.
5. You can get most ANY Gen without totally breaking your wallet.
6. (At least for '88 and earlier), you can keep it running great with an abundance of very inexpensive used parts available.
7. There are TONS of performance upgrades available.
8. You're allowed to drive into 7Stock. :-)
9. All Victoria Secret models drive them (in my dreams at least).
10. They go Zoom Zoom.

The 2nd Gens (89-91 for the most part) are the best looking and better performing sports cars from that era, minus the 944 and a few other exceptions. Think about it...

1. Nissan 300Z 8?-89- Looks like a doorstop, weighs more than your mother, and has an interior that looks like it came out of the late 70's.

2. Toyota MR2 MK1- Again, a not very sleek design with an interior and exterior that simply doesn't do it for me.

3. Porsche 944- Ehhh...they look great, at least the FC kinda looks like them. They're a bit more muscular looking.

4. Toyota Supra Mk3- A nice looking car, but seems to be 'fake', like a family sedan that pretends to be a sports car.

The FC has looks and performance that I think surpasses these cars, with an incredibly unique powertrain.

Ok this is my last post here cuz arguing on the internet is like running the special olympics, even if u win, you're still retarded!

MY max's

1st - 38mph
2nd- 65mph
3rd - 100mph
4th - (havent tried) maybe 120-125
5th - mazda claims like 143.

no more arguing, this post is TOP 10 REASONS FOR A RX-7, not WHO CAN CHIRP THE MOST GEARS

Well, I was kinda hoping for the "chicks dig it" factor, but ultimately it came down to just these two reasons:

1. The rotary engine for cars is just about the most unique and intuitive idea out there in the auto world.

2. This forum. Everyone's great and it just made me want to buy my RX-7 that much sooner so I could be a part of it.

Almost like a secret society. I love when the LARGE FULL SIZED stock GTs want to race and you smoke them.

If you really want to have a blast - autocross the bad boy or find a track with lower speeds (below 50MPH please or you need a roll bar / cage). Dragging just doesn't do it for me.

yo

white 89gxl. all the luxury, looks and power. They rev hight and get chip with duall exahust. afc and injector and youl be reving to 9000 rpms baby. Thats bad ***. Girls love high rpms, Girls get in my car and say this is a cool car. All the time. I just got 3 complements in the last 2 days and my cars just sitting in a parking lot right now. I agree , the interior on the 89 and up are very modern still. Looks more agressive thatn anything else i have seen, but I do have aftermarket stereo and equalizer to help it.

Thats my # 1 reason. I have been through 5 motors within 4,000 miles. And I do all the work myself and learn something new each time.

My reason(s):

The V-8 guys give me excuses as to why they lost.

The V-8 guys give me excuses as to why they won by only that much.

"What? 1.3L ?!"

"I just bought a new car. I didn't see one of those when I was shopping"

"I bet you could have beat him if you put in a larger cam"

"If you didn't have such a big cam, I bet he would have beat you"

"What's the deal with all that fire?"

I really like that last one. I had that twice Thursday night.

Mike
