Tool for self diagnosis on 87 RX& GXL?

I have an 87 RX 7 GXL which did not pass EQ. I took it to my regular mechanic and he said he was surprised to learn this car has self diagnostic capabilities but he does not have the tool for it. Does anyone know anything about this??

well if you want a good mechanic bring it to Rob at pineapple racing he knows more about your car than 99% of the people within 100 miles of you (he is in Portland)

Yep, hes worked on all kinds of rotaries.
As for the self-diagnostics, its quite basic. I believe you jumper something under the hood and it flahes the check engine light. That might be the s5, though. I'll look around and see if I can find something about it.
Edit: that was on s5's. For s4's there is a diagnostics thing but its very expensive. The easy way is to create an assembly with lights that flash to tell you the codes. Here's a link on how to make and use it : http://www.teamfc3s.org/info/article...odes/main.html
