TO4 S trim a downgrade from stock? 10mm inducer difference

Hey,

I just had to pull my S5 turbo out and i though while it out i will get the AirReseach to4 .60 cover and S-trim 48mm inducer wheel fitted but when i looked at the two my stock ( assuming ) S5 compresspor wheel is closer to 58mm ( inducer diameter ) is this correct and if so how is going to smaller (BY ALMOST 10mm) yet probably more efficient compressor wheel an upgrade?

Ive taken a few photos for your infomation. I know its no digital verniers but its good enought for you to get the Idea of the size variation?

Thanks
( please excuse the angles on the photos, it was hard trying to line up the tape while having to look through the viewfinder as the lcd screen is broken )

Looks like your turbo already has an upgraded compressor wheel and housing.

You sure it's a Garrett S-trim?
That looks pretty damn big.

The S-trim produces similar numbers to the stock HT-18 wheel, so the size should be pretty similar.

Sorry ted, maybe i confused you.

Neither of these is stock,

As you can see there is the Garret T04 sitting on top of what i belived to be my stock turbo. It has a 48mm inducer and specs out the same as the S trim

The Larger ( and dirtyer ) turbo i have determined to have a comp wheel similar to the V trim as it as a 55( approx, using a tape measure) inducer and 70mm exducer

If you look (don't have to try hard), your 'stock' turbo has A/R .60 stamped into it. So of course its going to be larger than that .48 next to it.

Someone built a hybrid for you!!

Yea i actually brought this turbo second hand from a mate who imported and i didnt take much notice to the sizing when i brought it, was more concerned about checking play in the shaft ( which there was and still is none )

I dont get the pawnd thing? is that aimed at me? If so i would have thought im lucky to get a hybrid for the price of a stock turbo.

Maybe im trippin

To do this accurately, you need to pop the compressor housing off and measure the wheel...

Yeah, the differences can be minute, so you really need a pair of dial calipers to do this.
You can try go down to your local hardware store and buy those plastic ones.
They are accuate enough, and it should cost you under $10.
