Tips for removing FTP lenses w/o breaking?

Has anyone here had success removing their FTP lenses, without breaking them? I've heard this can be difficult to do, and I want to remove mine so that I can polish them and restore them to their original finish. Does anyone have any brilliant suggestions for how to do this?

Aren't there like screws on the back?

Yeah, if I recall correctly, there are plastic screws coming off the lens, and metal nuts on those. From what I understand, it's surprisingly hard to get those nuts off without breaking the plastic.

I've just heard way too many stories of people breaking the FTP lenses, and don't want to have to buy a new pair

I had no problems taking mine off. Just get some liberal amounts of WD-40 on them and it should be fine. It's actually a barbed fitting inside the FTP side of the lens and a nut holding it to the bumper.

Mine came out with no issues that I can recall. It's a bit awkward to get your hand behind them, but it can be done.

I took mine off and restored them with no problems at all.

mine broke without my knowledge. plastic was just too brittle or they were already like that.

(the metal studs that the nut threads onto are press fit into the plastic, the surround for this area was broken so that the stud was no longer held in place. was like that on both sides, only inboard.)

Brittle? I doubt it.. those things are sturdy as ****. There's two METAL nuts on the back...

pop up your headlights, reach underneath them with a small 1/4" ratchet with a 10mm socket.. its WAY easy. Once the nuts are off, they slide right out.
