Tinting Rear Hatch?

Just wondering if there are jumbo sized do-it-yourself tint kits for the back window.. or if I'd have to just ghetto tint it with more than one of the smaller kits..

And how expensive would it be to get it professionally tinted by a shop?

I would let a pro do the rear hatch, the defroster lines and the side curves are a pita.

I had mine professionally done and they had to use 2 pieces. if they do it correctly they will meet the 2 pieces where a defroster line is and it wont be very visible at all.

Yeah, I got my two doors and hatch done for ~$150. I believe it was 15% on the back and 30% on the windows. Whatever the limit for tint is for Texas. Nice and shady but not limo.

i have to agree, the rear hatch is a bitch, my tinter did my back window twice before he got it right, yo have to shrink it so much to wrap the curves on that window,......i got my hatch, sides, and entire front windshield done for 200.....

Unless you know how to do it yourself, and are willing to do it a couple of times to figure it out.

On complex surfaces like the hatch it's very difficult to DIY unless you are willing to spend alot of time practicing and cleaning off messed up tint.

Things like windows are cake though. You just have to pull the window out of the car, use a good fluid to keep it moist for positioning (and de-bubbling) and trim when it's all dry.

If your hatch was done in 2 pieces it was because your tinter was not skilled enough to know how to use moldable tint. A very good tinter will do all windows in 1 piece without removing any of them. My guy charges me 100$ for all 4 windows.

not all skilled tinters have large enough sheets to do it in one sheet. it takes much more skill to hide the line properly than it is to mould the tint properly. i have done tinting on my own cars, it isn't as difficult as some make it out to be however having the hatch on a workstand like a turtle helps quite a bit.

my 2 cents.

Mine was done while the hatch was on the car again, with one piece that is professional.

The proper way to do the hatch is to used the back side of the film over the outside of the rear hatch. You mold it with the hatch closed. You then cut it along the black lines. Pull it off peel the film wet the inside and stick it on.

and if you are using 2 pieces overlay both sheets in the middle and place it in pisition and with a razorblade carefully cut along one of the defroster grids and remove the excess.
