timming marks totaly off
ok well my timming marks are like 90 degrees off but the car idles good but a little rough. Also the new motor i put in builds revs really slow and cant really make it up the smalest of hills except in first gear. Whats up with that?
As long as your gun is hooked up to your L1 coil, it will read right. The L1 coil is the coil that is closest to the front of the engine bay, attach the gun to that wire.
If thats the case, it sounds like you need to restab the cas. The haynes manual explains how to do it.

OR....
your spark plug wires are not hooked up to the correct places...
when i got my 7 and i was a total noob i had the wires mixed up and the timing turned way around to make it run.... it ran, idled rough and the marks were way off.
i put the wires on right and restabbed the cas where it should be.
silly me.. that was so long ago...

Like everyone else said, you need to get the timing set, thats problably the problem with the hills to. I had a cadillac that the timing was way off, it ran good until I hit a hill. When the load on the engine changes the timing advances, If it's way of in the first place it's just getting worse.

ok well i set the tps which was way out of range but that didnt help. Restabed the cas like 3 times. Even tried a diffrent CAS and then i got the leading to line up but as soon as i did that the car falled on its *** and was barley alive. I mean like 300 rpm and just rough as hell. Any thought besides me pushing it off of a cliff.
1. What happens when you have the light on the marks and rotate the cas one direction or the other? The marks move either to or from the fixed pointer, right? So I assume you couldn't get the marks to line up with the fixed pointer by rotating the cas, so you tried restabing the cas and finally got it closer. Righ????
2. The front pulley's four bolt pattern is not symetrical. One bolt hole is off a touch. Is it possible YOU or SOMEONE else put the front pulley on but wallowed out the holes so the bolts would go in??????????
3. Then again, you say with the lines matching it idled low and died. It could be the timing is actually ok but that you have a idle problem. In other words SOMETHING other than a timing problem. What? Got me. Idle adjust problems perhaps.
3. A common, cheap timing light is all one needs. Installed on either of the LEAD plug wires. If the light is a steady flashing on one LEAD plug wire but the other the flashing is irregular, then on THAT wire, reverse the timing light clamp on that wire and it will now flash steady and the irregular flash will now be on the other LEAD wire. That is normal and there was a factory service bulletin about that years ago. Nothing fancy required. I've no idea what exactly is wrong, we can only guess.

i dont think that it the idle when i get it to time up right because i cant even keep the car running and the motor wants to jump out of the car if you know what i mean. Today changed CAS with a spare motor that i have because the one that was in there i looked and the insulation on the wires were gone. Did that. set tps. Then with the idle i tried doing it with the jumper wire and the screw and it didnt change much if at all. any sugustions. thanks hailers
