tII tranny in a N/A
wassup guys,
just bought a '88 SE and the third gear grinds... just wondering if i could fit a j-spec tII tranny? If so, is there any benefits between the n/a and turbo trannys?
or does anyone know how hard it is just to rebuild mine myself? My friend rebuilt my honda tranny for me would it be the same to rebuild the fc tranny?
thanks

wells, it could be the bushings. the last time i put in gear oil they were worn, but i didnt have enough money to replace them. I remember seeing a set going for like 60 bucks on ebay. also put in some redline gear oil, because if it's the snycros, the redline oil would calm em down

But back to the subject... does anyone know if I can use a tII tranny in my n/a?
and if I were to rebuild my tranny myself, can anyone tell me how to go about it? do I just take everything apart and swap out the damaged gears/synchros for new ones? anyone with tips or techniques?
thanks!

Need flywheel, clutch and clutch disc, starter, probably the Tii slave cylinder, and driveshaft modifcation. If you dont wanna modify the shaft get the Tii driveshaft along with the tii diff (or just get the flange from the tii rear end, and use tii driveshaft if u wanna keep the N/A diff)
If u got a lot of help it's easy rebuilding the tranny, get the FSM or download from fc3s.org

the splines on the flange dont match up i believe.
i am doing this exact same thing. 88t2 tranny in a 90n/a.
good deal for me, 700CAN bucks rebuilt with new synchros and bearings. gears are mint, had about 50k kilomters when the car was rolled and written off.
this is what im doing:
stock turbo clutch/pressure plate, RB light steel flywheel, and counterweight from a 90 automatic.
using a 88t2 driveshaft, and the n/a rear end. they dont hook up, but what im doing is welding the flange to the driveshaft. should woprk just fine.
as far as slowing you down, it weighs like 30 pounds extra, and the gear ratio is a little off. no big deal.
btw how many of us could afford to lose 30 pounds to offset this extra weight...... theres your incentive. i also plan to lower my tire profile on the 17's down to 40.

well considering my eventual plans for the car, i dont consider it a decrease in performance at all. i consider it a cost effective way to prepare for the future. to rebuild my tranny would cost a good 1K, instead i got a turbo one for 700. great deal for me, and no worries about handling the extra HP down the road.
all in all im ahead of the game.

1K to rebuild it! Where the Mazda dealer? lol its not that hard you just need to keep the synchros and gears in order, I believe even the haynes manuel has the procedure in it. Just remember how everything came apart(pictures or notes and drawings) Youll need a couple of different pairs of snapring pliers.

I would only do it if you plan to drop a TII in there. Then, go the whole 9 yards and get the TII driveshaft, diff, halfshafts. i plan on doin the whole TII drivetrain swap next summer, and drop in a TII engine by next December. I agree w/ Evil, go to a j-yard and get a lower mileage N/A tranny. Mine is 100K and it never grinds, even on 7K+ shifts when racing.

Well I have had experience with a third gear grind as well. Every RX-7 I have driven grinds alittle third gear. After playing with my GTU and using the clutch and throttle different on third gear, none of them grind for me anymore. This messes me up when I drive the 280zx though. It lurches alittle and chirps the tires cause I'm so used to shifting different to third.

anyone know a good manual I can view for info on the rebuild?
can't I just use a GTU rear end (4.33 w/ LSD) with the tII drivetrain, and won't that take care of the gear ratios while tuffening up my car too...
I was planning on tossing in a Streetported N/A motor down the line... but I just bought the car las week and was just gonna throw in an intake and full exhaust for now and do something about the the tranny
won't I need the added strength of the tII drive train with the ported motor? or am I wasting my time? Do you guys think I'll be okay with just a rebuilt tranny and maybe adding the LSD rear end?
p/s - anyone know the hp/tq figures on a street ported motor?

naw a streeported motor is fine with an n/a tranny. i only did mine with a t2 tranny cause the opportunity was there for a good price. i plan on induction/porting down the line so it was only logical for me to do it now instead of later.
i can always just swap out the rear end if i want with absolutely no problems.
