TII Swap, getting TII Cruise to operate

In doing my S4 TII swap into my S4 Vert (also know I used a TII emission Harness), I installed the TII Cruise actuator and TII Cruise Control Unit. But, found the cruise still didn't work.

Looking at the wiring diagram, it looks like the only TII/NA difference is that the G/B wire does run through my TII emission harness to connector FEM-01 but my Vert Main Harness FEM-01 connector is blank where there would need to be a corresponding pin the G/B wire. So, I would assume all I need to do is add a pin to the Main Harness connector to connect to the G/B wire and run a wire from it to the pin on the Cruise Control Unit F-52 connector for the G/B wire.

What is throwing me, per the same wiring diagram, there already is a G/B wire part of the F-52 connector for the Cruise Control Unit. So, can I assume the G/B wire is buried in the Main Harness near the FEM-01 connector and all I need to do is dig it out and solder it to a pin and slide the pin into the Main Harness Connector? Or do I indeed need to add a wire that runs from the Main Harness connector to the Cruise Control Unit connector?

Anybody that did a complete swap have any experience with this to share?

Some GB wires are for cruise, some are not. Some are made for water temperature switches for the auxillary fan.

So? Did you figure it out??? Your second post is????????? You should not have to run any wires.

What I'm saying is, if you look at FEM-01, JUST the TURBO EMISSION HARNESS SIDE OF THE PLUG, you have a GB wire on the bottom row, second from the end. THAT is the cruise wire and mates with the GB in the FRONT HALF OF THE PLUG that should have a GB in it already.

The OTHER GB wire, bottom row, forth from the right, is for the water temp switch for the auxillary fan.

You probably already figured this out, but just in case.....

There are a number of turbo EM harness in n/a out there that are disfunctional and the owners ain't got a clue. But, heck, they're happy with what they have and it's their car.

Was just a poorly indicated bump

Still no clue. But, the GB wire to the plug going into the Speed Control Unit, it has to be regarding the speedo. What else would be talking to the Speed Control Unit that has a G/B wire.

Did you read my post above your last one????? I'll add a series four cruise jpg if needed, but you probably have one.

Here are two jpg that MIGHT help. The first one explains the GB wires and the second explains where to put the two wires for the alternators small plug.

You do not ever want to leave those two wires (BrR and BrB) in the Turbo EM harness. If you do you will backfeed 12v to the ECU pin 2B with the BrR and send a gnd signal to the alt warning relay with the BrB.

By the way, beware. I've NEVER done a swap using a turbo EM harness on a series four. But I guarantee you I THINK I'm right. Pretty damn sure.

By the way, I've used both vacuum assisted and electric cruise motors on my car without making any changes to the wiring. Both worked fine. The electric is a touch more responsive/accurate/better/gooder/more refined.

S4 TII swa[, cruise control

So, it was just a plug and play? Huh! Maybe one of my components are bad then.

You are using a Turbo cruise computer right???

And the cruise switch is wired to the series cruise control computer (no mixing and matching series switches and computers without re-wiring).

If it worked with your n/a it should have worked for your turbo. And I assumed that it worked before and the parts are the same.

I'll go out and check tomorrow on the cruise unit. I'm almost positive it's the same unit. The only thing I changed was the motor in the engine bay. If memory serves.

I've also a stock 86 n/a with cruise. I'll swap cruise boxes (the one in the car on the left foot well) with the one in the conversion and It'll still work.

Just swapping electricl motors in the engine bay should make no difference at all.

So the key question: did it work before the conversion? Same parts? Or??

All S4 parts

Used stock TII cruise actuator, stock TII cruise control module (behind ds kick panel) from the TII donor car, and original Vert S4 cruise control switch. Do I need to change out the switch from my TII donor car as well?

Related, the cruise switch does light when turned on, and when I push the orange button to set the cruise the "cruise" lights up on the switch. So, switch seems to be operating ok except the car doesn't hold a speed. Related, I checked to make sure the actuator cable is properly connected to the throttle body. So, that isn't it either.

If you are getting the lock and activate signals, then the next thing I am looking at is if the actuator cable is pulling tight. Perhaps a bad actuator???

bad actuator

Makes sense. The cruise in my TII works, so I'll swap out the actuators and see.

About the vert cruise switch. Doew it look like your other series four switch? I mean, does the front/face of it have a slope/cant/angle to it? Or is it like the normal s4 switch with the face straight up and down.

A series five switch will have a angle to the face. It won't be straight up/down.

The 88 vert uses the same switch as any other S4 and the same cruise computer as any other S4 non turbo- just has a different mounting location and bracket.

Now the actuator mounts very different on the vert.

You could just get a meter and some long meter leads and ring out those four wires b/t the motor in the engine bay and the Cruise Control Unit plug. Just to make sure they are good. Even with a Turbo EM harness they should still ring out. Check the gnd wire on the motor plug also. There's no reason for it to not be working if all you did was change the EM harness and no other harness.

Cruise Control problem solved

I was wrong about the wiring between the Actuator and the Cruise Control Unit is different for a TII against a NA. On physical inspection, it's all there. Also, what I thought was the cruise control unit I swapped from my TII wasn't the control unit after all. Related, the actual Cruise Control unit is behind the drivers kick panel on a Coupe, but is located next to the ECU under the passenger side floor pan in a Vert.

The problem proved to be the Cruise Control Unit itself. I replaced the original Cruise Control Unit that controled my NA type vacume assist actuator with the Cruise Control Unit out of my TII parts car that controled the electric actuator (which is what is in my Turbo Vert now) and the Cruise now works perfectly.

So, either they're the same and my original unit went bad. Or the Cruise Control Unit for a vacume assist (NA type) Actuator is a different part number than a Cruise Control Unit for an electric (TII type) Actuator.

Can someone look up the part numbers to see if they're different or the same and post to this thread to close that loop for future reference by other Forum members? Thanks.

Page 2-H16 of the parts fische says two different numbers.

FB01-66-320A W/O turbo

FB44-66-320 With Turbo

I swear I only swapped the turbo actuator into the non turbo car.

So, expect a followup later today. I'm going to do a little swapping around. It's always possible my memory didn't server me right.

Well I pulled the ccunit out of the na to turbo car and its a FB44. I thought it was still a FB-01. Oh well.

I went to the 86 na and put its FB01 in the now turbo car. It did not work. Oh well. So I guess a FB44 does go with the elect actuator afterall. Maybe.

My only out is the 86 isn't inspected right now and I can't/won't drive it soooooooo I can't swear that FB01 is good or not.

So? The ccunit that did not work for you has FB-01 on it?

Thumbs up The Cruise Control Unit that didn't operate

the TII Electric actuator has FB01A stampted on it.

The Actualtor out of my TII parts car that DID operate the TII electric actuator had some corrosion on the case that covered up the number stamped on it, so can't tell what it is other than it began with FB.

Thanks Hailers. Now this is out there for future reference by all.

Just in case: the cruise control unit I'm talking about is the one inside the car and is in the left kick panel on MOST cars. It didn't help that I wrote ccunit for cruise control unit. Anyway, at least it works for you now.
