TII Pivot Ball Swap

I'm about to swap in a S4 TII tranny to my boosted N/A and will be using an ACT HD PP/6 puck clutch. I've read that they break pivot ***** so I wanted to go ahead and replace mine. I've read that the S5 ones are stronger and would prefer to use one, but have read conflicting information on whether I can or not.

So, can I use a (TII) S5 pivot ball in an S4 tranny?

Thanks

No. Not interchangeable.

If it has not been changed since ...forever, would be wise to do so. It's cheap and always overlooked .
You NEED to change it if you're going with upgraded pressure plate.

Thanks for the answer!

Can anyone second that, or conversely dispute it?

i looked up the parts, and there is a different part number S4 and S5, so i would order the correct one for the car.

I'm leaning towards doing that, but the part numbers being different isn't my main concern. A lot of part numbers are different S4 to S5 but they're interchangeable so I wasn't sure if this was also or not.

the S5 one is twice the price, so i'd think its actually different, although they may have both been updated somehow

The S5 is thicker all the way around.
Trust me..... I had both.

Atkinsrotary.com has pics of the two. The s5 one looks beefier, but other than that they're very similar. However, I'm not sure how tight the tolerances are regarding height/width, or if the thread patter is the same.

So, regardless of price, appearance, part number, etc., are they interchangeable?

the Xtreme PP is the one that brakes pivot *****. I've never had a problem with the Heavy Duty pressure plate. I've seen the Xtreme one break them several times (owner replaces pivot ball, it breaks again). That was on an S4.

Excellent question. Yes, I've been reading the responses. Thus far only 1 has been helpful (yours, of which I truly appreciate). To be honest, the rest skirted around the answer but didn't really hit the target. I'm sure it will be useful information to someone else who is just curious about the pivot ball in general, especially in regards to the ACT HD PP.

All that said, I have a friend who has an order form for proof of putting a S5 pivot ball in an S4 tranny and it worked. So now I'm a bit at odds of what to do. It's possible that he had an S5 tranny but he and the previous owner of the car both attest it's S4 so I'm still at a loss.

My car is basically a track car at this point so it's foreseeable that the pivot ball could get abused some by hard shifts so I'm just wanting to be extra cautious.

Is your S4 pivot ball easily accessable? It would be a bit of a pain but I could unbury the spare TII trans in the garage, pull the pivot ball, and give you some dimensions from a caliper and make a guess on the metric thread.

If your S4 isn't handy I don't know if I want to mess with it.

I do have it handy, however I don't own an accurate caliper so that's probably a no go. I appreciate it though.

I'll probably just order one of each (fairly cheap) and compare them when I get them.

Alright.
I don't post unless I am 100% sure and have experienced it first hand.
Years back I ordered an S4 TII pivot ball from Moazdatrix when I was changing out the clutch. They sent me what looked like a more beefier pivot ball so I thought "OK cool, Mazda upgraded this thing".
The difference between the S4 and S5 is the S4 has a smaller head, neck and part that threads into the bell houising is smaller.

The S5 is noticeably beefier. I had it side by side to send a picture to Mazdatrix because they too thought it was the same.

Your friend being able to get an S5 pb into an S4 tranny is hard to believe.
Even the landing area isn't much for you to bore it out to accept it.

I'm sure there's no difference between S5 NA and TII pivot ball.
There are 3 different part numbers. One I received was an S5 TII.
Unless the S4 TII/ NA and S5 NA share the same part. That would make more sense if he was able to use an S5 pivot ball.
Mazdatrix is not the most reliable parts store. I've had a few wrong parts come.
