tightening 1st gear on auto tranni?

ok i have a 1990 GXL with an automatic tranni. is there any way to tighten up 1st gear cause i willl be running it in an autocross soon. before someone say "just swap it with a 5spd manual tranni." i must inform you i am broke! no job at the moment. i just want to know if there is a way to do this and if there is what is it.

note i will do a 5spd manual swap when i have the money but first comes brakes(major overhaul needed)

with a quick shift kit maybe, otherwise you would need to omit some check ***** from the valve body and only someone experienced in building these trannies would know which to omit and how to tighten up the band for first. (it would still cost at least $50 in a tranny service kit with pan gasket and new transmission fluid anyways mind you to even be able to do much of anything even with the auto)

good luck, no one really spends time learning how to upgrade the stock auto tranny so you pretty much are SOL with it.
