thump in transmission when changing gears

here is my problem....

when i shift gears i get a large thump form somewhere in the rear of the car. i have had this problem once before and it was the u-joints...but not this time. i cant pinpoint the problem but it is very annoying and feels like the transmission is gonna fall out. i have checked the driveshaft and it appears to be fine. i have also checked for any play in the rear end but cant find anything. anyone got any suggestions???
(this is an 88 se 210,000 miles)

Very similar problem that happend to me in a 1987 Base. There is mount that keeps the diff. housing connected to the rear subframe, it may have broken.

Hope that helps

It's most likely your front differential bushing. These things are almost always goofed up on our cars and I imagine your car is no exception.

you have a broken diff mount.

you need to have it welded back on.

Just replaced the front diff. mount on my car. push up and down on the "nose" (where the drive shaft bolts up) of the diff. . If it moves, the mount is broken.

I can do one better, here is a pic of what I had to deal with this last weekend. This is what happens when the diff mount doesnt get tightened, and also additional pony's will cause this. I had to manufacture an 1/8 inch slotted plate to weld in so the nuts would bear all around. Sorry no pics of the plate but here is a pic of the tab that broke off. It wasnt to bad of a job getting the sub frame out, dont be discouraged.....

The stock ones suck, so if you're going to buy one, try and get a stronger one.
