? for those who have swapped to FD alternator
ok ive got an FD alternator on the way now to swap onto my 87 T2. ive read a few write-ups on how to do the swap and all but i have a questionor two. the write-up i read mentioned a spacer that is attatched to the FD alt. pulley and having to cut that off and put it on somewhere to make it fit onto the FC. i know there is already a spacer on the FC but it goes on with the main bolt of the alt. my question is where does the spacer cut off the FD pulley go? does it go on the alt shaft behind the pulley or does it go where the original spacer goes? the write-ups say it has to be ground down to be the right width to make the alt sit in the right place. does anyone know the actual width it has to be? like a real measurement? i understand everything else about the swap, its just this spacer stuff throws me off. thanks for any help.
Good question.
The spacer sits behind the Pulley. Was that one of your questions?
I too have a FD Alternator but with a Dual Pulley. Next time I'm there I'll enquire on your question. Although you may already have It solved by then.
FWIW, the Alternator guy said you can't use the FC Spacer. He didn't even make an attempt to shave It down or whatever. He just found another one and we went from there.

I didnt attempt to use the spacer on the FD alternator pulley.. just didnt feel like cutting it off. I just used another spacer from another alternator (was at napa and girlfriends uncle is manager and let me go threw the spacers to find one I wanted to use) ..but you could cut the FD pulley spacer off and put that behind your pulley. I too used a dual alt pulley, put the spacer behind it and threw some RED locktite on the threads before zapping the bolt back onto the shaft to tighten the pulley on
mine was a trial and fit type thing ..put it on, see if spacer was too long..shave some down til i could get a good hold to zap the bolt on. I have a link at home that says about the right size, from MikeL's page, but I'm at school right now so I dont know it off hand.

The spacer on the altenator you have now (the FC alt). Is the right one for the FD alternator. All the spacer does is keep the pulley from seating all the way down on the shaft, and grinding on the alternator case.
Here is what you do:
Remove your FC pulley from the alternator, behind the pulley is the spacer. It should just slip off the shaft. Widen the interior diameter of the spacer using a dremel or something (the shaft diameter of the FD pulley shaft is slightly wider then the FC). Once you have widened the spacer enough, just inmstall it on the FD alternator, and get you some pulleys!

I just used a pulley from another alternator. I don't know what it came off of. The shaft on the FD alternator is bigger, so you have to either drill out the FC spacer and pulleys (this COULD be done with a drill press) or replace them.

It probably came from an early type GM alternator, thats where I got mine. It fit perfectly.
As far as the spacer, I used a Dremel and a large sanding barrel bit. That widened it out perfectly.

so the spacer thats already on my current FC alternator will be the right thickness to line up the pulley's correctly with the FD alternator? ok great that sounds easy enough. thanks guys.
I took mine to a local alternator shop and they matched an early GM pulley on. it already had a spacer attached to the GM pulley. bolted the pulley right on and that was it!
