third gen rims on a t2

What size are 3rd gen rims? What size spacer do I need to make them fit my 88 T2? Whats the most rubber I can put on them? I've seen them on second gens and think this would be an economical way to get these ugly *** t2 wheels off my car. At least untill I can afford some nice Volks. I want to powder coat them white to keep the 10AE theme going.

Thanks,
Mike

Stock FD rims are 16x8" with a +50mm offset. Stock on your car is +40mm. You will need 25mm spacers. You can stick on pretty phat tires on 8" wide rims although unless you have coilovers the tires will rub on the suspension. 225 is widest you can go up front unless you have coilvers. The rear isn't so much of a problem, I'd imagine 245 wouldn't be a problem. Keep in mind you will probably pay about $400 for a set if FD rims, and about $75-100 per rims to get them powder-coated...and spacers aren't cheap either, plus you'll need longer studs so your lugs will thread all the way with the spacers on. And with 25mm spacers on you won't want to race your car. Very hard on the bearings and the studs. I was planning on doing the EXACT same thing with my Black GTU, getting FD rims, spacers, powder-coating white. I went so far as to actually buy a set of FD rims off the Internet for $400...then I realized it wasn't THAT much more money to get a set of 16x8" Volk TE-37's that were the correct offset(no spacers needed) and already powder-coated white...so I sold the FD rims and bought a set of Volks(and thats a whole other story)

Thanks speedracer,
That is very good info. I can get the rims for 300 and powder coat them myself. Didn't know about the studs though. For me it would still be cheaper but I'm starting to lean toward just holding out for the volk te-37's. could you tell me where I can get them and how much they are? Can I get them in 17's?

Thanks,
MIke
