Think she's flooded real bad..tried everything...

88 TII. I'm pretty sure it's a flooding issue, and a very bad one. I've pulled the plugs and turned over the engine and it's still flooded. Tried ATF, still flooded. Pulled egi, and I have a fuel pump switch, but nothing helps. I can get the engine to catch and start to turn over, but then it dies out right away. Is there anything else I can do?

thanks

How did his engine get flooded if he has a fuel pump switch.

Did you just forget to turn it off ?

I mean I thought the purpose of fuel pump switches, so that flooding doesnt happen.

When you pulled spark plugs, did you smell fuel ?

After you manage to get your car started, is your fuel pump switch on ?

The way mine works is that you have the switch off, start the car and as soon as it starts, you push the switch to let the fuel start flowing or if the fuel pump switch is off after the car starts it just dies.

Did you hold the throttle fully open while cranking? If you didn't you're just pumping the fuel round and round instead of clearing it out.

A fuel pump switch is supposed to be used in case of a flooded engine, not as a use-it-every-time band-aid. If you're doing that, you need to stop pretending you don't need a rebuild...

why would he need a rbuild? I thought that flooding was caused by leaky/dirty injectors?

Or low compression, which is only cured by a rebuild.

I flooded mine once checking the injectors for leakage. One popped out of the fuel rail and raw fuel poured over the engine and into the hole the injector would be in.
After pulling the plugs and cranking a few times. I used the Pull the EGI fuse and hold the gas the floor. Crank till it sputters. Put the fuse back in (foot still on the floor) crank. If no start pull the fuse again. Took awhile but I got it going but man what a smoke show when it started.

Assuming nothing else is wrong (AFM properly connected, fuel delivery ok),
keep trying or do a tow start

Use regular oil instead of ATF.

when engine catches, get ready to press the gas pedal otherwise it's gonna die and you're gonna have to do it all over again.

Or, as someone else suggested, push start it.

For Kevino,
try using oil instead of atf. Make sure to use the proper 'complex' unflooding procedure which is all over this forum (and on my page under my own faq->flooding). When engine seems to catch, be ready to work the pedal to get it going, otherwise you'll have to do it all over again. If you can, get a push/tow start, that works every time.

Causes of flooding:

Leaky injectors (I don't know, that's what everybody is saying, I don't quite believe it but it does not hurt to get the injectors cleaned, but don't be too surprised if it does not solve your flooding problems)

Poor compression (IMO that's cause numero uno)

Weak battery

Tow start it get it warm and then when you shut it down dont start it for like 1 1/2 hours. If it still doesnt start your injectors probably should be sent out and cleaned.
