Thermo valve leak - repair/remove?

My 86 na has a coolant leak. I took off the throttle body and found a hole in the metal nipple for the thermo valve that connects with the 90 degree hose that goes to the top of the block. The hole is a rectangle about 1/2 inch long and 1/8 inch wide on the bottom of the nipple and put a hole through the hose in the same spot. I cut the bad part of the hose off and it is still long enough to reach the valve. Can I JB weld this hole? Or should I bypass the valve and reroute the hose straight to the bac valve. Thanks for any help.
