Is there a spot to lift the rx-7 up with a floor jack?

I am starting the body work on my 86 GX ...i need to weld a patch in by the drivers side pinch weld and i need to kow if there is anywhere else i can use a floor jack to lift the front end up without using the pinch weld and also i need to know where the right spot to put the jack stands once its up in the air both front and rear

and also if there is a spoti can lift the rear up by a floor jack

in my mx-3's chitons book it showed where ....but for this it didn't have it so i would rather know the correct spot rather than mess anything up

The Factory Service Manual can be found in the FAQ For FC thread. It contains all this information and more, and is an essential tool for any sort of service work that needs to be performed on these cars.

Additionally, the Haynes service manual for the 1986 thru 1991 RX-7 (both turbo and NA) can be found at most local auto parts stores or purchased from any good bookstore (ISBN number 1 56392 007 7). It is only about $25 and is a great quick reference for things like this. Not only does it contain most of the information in the FSM condensed into an easy to read format, but it includes full wiring diagrams as well.

These manuals will answer 99% of service related questions for the car and if you intend to do your own repair work, you will need at least one of them. Preferably both, since the FSM is a free download.

The differential works pretty good for the back. I have no idea for the front besides ramps.

I use the jack at the front crossmember, up all the way and slide the ramps under the front wheels. Then lower the jack. The wheels end up a half inch higher than the ramps.

Aaron's right, all the jacking and support points are clearly shown in the Haynes manual, FSM and owner's handbook.

It's the 7th unnumbered page at the front of the book.

The FSM can be downloaded via the links in the FAQ.

Whenever I'm using a floor jack, I jack the front under the subframe and the rear ar the diff.

ya i squished my radiator when the jack slipped off. I had just drained the coolant and the oil adn things were slippery. I will never jack from there again. Next time i have to lift the car i will do each side at a time. I will do it that way until i get air jacks or a lift. If you really have to lift it from the front cross member i would make damn sure it is very clean then jack it.

There is nothing wrong with jacking from that the middle of the front crossmember, you simply fucked it up. For the car to slip off the jack it must've been incorrectly positioned to begin with, i.e. sitting on the edge. Oil or coolant would have no effect.

Personally I never use jackstands because they scare me. I prefer ramps. Generally I'll jack the car up at the rear, slide the ramps under the wheels, then do the same for the front.

If you are going to use stands, place them on the subframe where it bolts to the body. I try to keep all lifting devices confined to the subframe as to minimize damage to the underbody and pinch weld area (on all the RX-7s I've owned, the pinch welds have been totalled from jacking).

I love how both of these pics show where you should be placing the stands..........and then have ACTUAL stands under the rocker panels.....
