Question is there something wrong with my starter or batery??

I have a 86 5spd N/A and when I try to start it it takes for freakin' ever to turn over. If i drive for a while it starts easier; does this point to my batery, or could it be the starter still??

I'm not bad with most "car stuff" but i know almost nothing about ignition. Any help would be great

thanks,
john

I would say that if it turns over quickly, then the battery is fine
sound like a flooding problem if it were that

but if it turns over slowly and doesn't catch until a 7th/8th+ turn...then the battery's probably dying

the "If i drive for a while it starts easier" would be the clearest signal that it is your battery.

driving = charge your battery
just drive around for a day keeping it above 4000rpm and redlining it every now & then
do that for the next few days, you should be good

I did that with my dead battery, works like new now!!!

Don't you have a battery guage on your dash. Check it before you turn it over and see what it reads. Sounds like Battery problems to me too.

Thanks for the input, i was leaning toward the battery since yes it barely reaches 12 on the voltmeter w/o the assistance of the alt. Could this also be the reason my horn dosn't work all the time?

oh and i think ill just buy a new battery but thanks for the tip.....hehe

a new battery should solve the problem. If your old one keeps dying after being used fairly often, your bettery is either bad, or your Alt. is not doing its job. Not sure on the horn though.
