Are there software/hardware for computer diagnosis?

Can a guy get software and hardware for FC diagnosis, short of spending 30k for professional stuff?

I've been thinking of getting an FC (I've had several FBs) but there is even more electronic controlled stuff on the FC than the FB. Which means that very likely I'll have to take it to a mechanic if I have any problems. But we all know that there are computers in the car and memory and connectors that can be checked. A guy ought to be able to load up some software on a laptop, attach connectors thru a USB and go to work diagnosing problems.

I've seen guys with FDs using a laptop to tune their cars.

Well, you can

make a tool that flashes trouble codes for pretty cheap. there are plans around.

buy a snap-on scanner along with the right mazda diagnostic plug

get a snap-on vantage that tells you how to check individual electronic components, which has an onboard oscilloscope and multimeter

People tuning with a laptop have aftermarket ECU's...

Honestly, I've never needed any of that **** to work on my FC.

A DMM, a copy of the FSM, and a brain is all that is needed.

Using laptops on an FD means they are not using the stock OEM ECU.

+1 on what has been said.

Mazda has a few fancy tools for checking the ECU, logicon (HVAC control), and of course Compression, but you can for the most part get by without them for most things. Look at the FSM (see sig. for links) under the fuel and emmission sections and you'll see it has tests for a lot of things.
