are there different starters or are they all universal?

i need to find a replacement starter for my 88 gxl. are all the starters the same or are they different in s5 or turbo models?

all na 5-speed fc starters are the sames........ all automatic and turbo fcs are the same starter

Actually the auto starters are better and stronger than the turbo ones because they need to turn over the torque convertor also.

interesting....didnt know that! but i was only referring to fitment...... i guess next time ill get a auto starter for my turbo!

the flywheel weighs more than the torque converter, this is news to me.

For a series four car there are three different numbers given.

TURBO: N318-18-400r

Non Turbo: N326-18-400R

Automatic: N327-18-400R

True, but a flywheel is just pure rotating mass, not being dragged through oil.

I'm sure part of it is the fact that the starter has to turn the transmission, which will be more draggy than the flywheel (going through tranny fluid & such)... but I don't know how exactly the differences would cancel out or not.

*shrug* I have a perfectly good starter off a S4 NA I'll send your way for shipping + $20.
