Yeah the exterior/interior is pretty much the same to my knoledge (for 86-88), it is the 89-91 (s5) that have slightly different exterior look, and I am pretty sure they have different interior... but there is pretty much no variation within the 86-88 year range.

Correct me if I'm wrong!!! =)

Changes between '86 and '87 (for North America):
The radiator sub tank was moved to in front of the radiator shield and there was also a minor revision to the power steering software diagnostics and AAS software (available on the GXL and Turbo II models).

All '87 models also received a revised idiot/warning light panel with a blue display clock instead of the red/orange clock display found on the 86 model year versions and new clutch interlock (to help prevent the car from being started in gear). ABS (anti-lock brakes) became available on the GXL and Turbo II models as a '87 model year option.

The '87 TurboII model was released early '86 as a step up from the GXL.

Changes between 87 and 88:
Responding to the public's demand for a rotary powered convertible car, Mazda introduced the first factory convertible RX-7 in 1988. Mazda's internal designation was FC3C for this new version. This new RX-7 came as a targa style power two piece retractable roof and exclusive 15" x 6.5" light alloy BBS wheels with 205/60/VR15 tires wrapped around them. Weighing in at a portly 3003 lb., the convertible (also called the Cabriolet overseas) was slightly more than 280 pounds heavier than the GXL model; even with the aluminum hood and other light weight parts. The increased weight was mostly due to the reinforcements to the chassis and heavy duty rear convertible section (with integrated rollbar). Drag coefficient was a very low 0.33 with the top up and a respectable 0.38 with the top down. In North America, the convertible was powered by the normally aspirated 13B version of the rotary motor, but in Japan the potent 13BT turbo motor was the only available power plant. The convertible also came standard with the heavy duty suspension and 4 piston brakes found on the Sport/GS, 88 GTU and Turbo model.

The base model was discontinued and the GX/Luxury model was renamed the SE and became the entry level RX-7.

The new GTU model was created to replace the GS/Sport with a model that recognized the 8 year Champion win run of the Mazda RX-7 GTU race car. This model came standard with the Turbo II suspension, Turbo II seats, body color Turbo II aero power mirrors, Limited slip differential, drag lowering aero parts from the GS/Sport and a new wing rear spoiler (also found on the '88 Turbo II).

All '88 models again received revised idiot/warning light clusters (now with a black out look and angle for fewer reflections) other minor wiring updates including revised fuel injectors and ECUs, new black plastic rear model emblems (to replace the stickers found on the '86 and '87 models) and updated carpeting. Polished look wheels became standard but in the same style on NA cars, while the Turbo II models received updated and slightly lighter wheels.
