is there a 6th gear? ;)

ok, so i put another tranny in. with my 1st tranny, when i was in 5th gear, it never said to "shift up".... now, today i noticed with the new tranny, it says to shift up when i'm in 5th(only when i go over 2500rpm..as expected)

so what's wrong? did i connect something wrong? it's not a big deal, but it gets to me.

Do you shift up when it says to? No? You're losing precious MPG then!
Haha! No but seriously, there is a sensor on the tranny I'm sure that detects when you're in 5th and disables that shift up BS. For future reference, just remove the bulbs from the shift light and be done with it.

This might have something to do with the neutral switch on the transmission since it monitors fifth gear to adjust fuel consumption.

Perhaps your car is asking you to install an hks 6spd?

Or just to shift into "RACING" gear, that's what the R stands for right ?

I haven't had a race yet so, I can't wait to finally use my "RACING" gear!

I have this exact same problem. So is the switch broken then? is this easily fixable?

Yes it's relatively easy to fix. You can get a good replacement throught "KEM" at any NAPA or Papa Autoparts. It's around 20-30 dollars. The installation is straight forward.

1. Jackup the car.
2. Slide under the drivers side of the car and reach up on the drivers side of the transmission.
3. Follow the wires that are there back to the switch.
4. You will need a wrench to untighten the switch.
5. This is the tedious part you have to thread the new switch into the hole just by feeling around.
6. Hook up the connection and your set to go.

The reason I asked about the backup lights was... the reverse lights and the 5th gear thing are controlled by the same switch.

yup, it must be the switch then.. when i got the tranny, the wires were all screwed up... almost falling apart. thanks for the info about the wires f1blueRx7. as for the back up lights.. i dunno. cuz my tranny won't shift into reverse.

As long as the reverse lights still work, I wouldn't bother replacing the 5th gear switch just because the shift-up light comes on. The only other function of the switch is emissions-related (opens split air solenoid in 5th gear), so I'd just pull the bulb out of the dash and not be bothered by it in any gear.
