The Terrible DETONATION

Alrighty senario(if thats how you spell it)-1988 turbo2- Has racing beat exhaust and that homemade FCD as described on FC3s.org. Has pretty much all emissions removed. It also has a full racing beat exhaust. I recently had to removed the old pulsation damper(leaking as usual) and i replaced it with a banjo fitting i had lieing around. For about a week or so the car was fine, no detonating. Now its detonating and it seems to be getting easier which worries me slighly that maybe an apex seal is toasted. I tried backing off the timing and that didnt seem to work. And for the amount it has detonated recently... oh boy... im sure the rotor housings got all sorts of chatter marks on them. I rerouted that stupid coolant line close to the injectiors(no choke, got sick of fighting with the rear rotor housing to the choke hook up) and was thinking that could be a possibility but i would have thought that would have been a problem from the start. I am thinking that maybe i got a bad tank of gas, but ill have to fill up to find out. I dont have any fuel or intercooler upgrades which is stupid of me but i dont have the money. I am also thinking maybe i need a fuel filter but i replaced that one uhh maybe only 10k miles ago so its getting close but it should be alright. Any suggestions??? I don't want my rotary to blow up that would suck.

Steve

and its s-c-e-n-a-r-i-o, just for future reference. You are probably hitting fuel cut man especially with your upgraded exhaust...get some injectors like Jaared suggested and you should be fine
Umm, he has a FCD. Maybe it isnt working. Yea don't push it hard with those mods. Do you at least have a boost gauge?
Rewire your fuelpump at least!
680's or 720's!
Walbro Fuelpump
Don't push it without those mods. Or put on a stock exhaust until you can afford it.
Open exhaust is fun till you pop a seal.

i posted in the parts for sale section with a "WTB a pair 680cc or 720cc injectors" thread and got a cleaned pair for $95 shipped 2 days later.
around here all you have to do is ask and people will dig through the pile of junk they have in their shop.
*note* the 680ccs came on gsl-se first gens.... get a set of those and they will go right in to a low imp car.. if you have the high imp setup (mid 87 and later) then you will have to either buy a set of high imp injectors or run a resistor pack.
Do a search if you need to know what injectors your car has.

Detonation sounds like a ball-pien hammer hittin a solid chuck of steel slag covered with tar!!, pfHHHOOOINK-UNK!!! usually, when this happens, it takes an apex seal with it and then when the engine returns to idle, it will lope, and run like crap.
My thinking is that the FCD is set to the wrong voltage... in the article about making them, it first says to set the output to 3.7 volts and later to 3.65 volts... the first few I made i set to 3.7 and sometimes they would still let fuel cut and sometimes they wouldn't I set them all to 3.65 and test 'em now and haven't had a problem.
Take the FCD apart, find the blue cermit trimmer (if it was made like PS's design, there will be a blue rectangular part with a brass turn post on one end) and turn it 1/4 to 1/2 turn counter clockwise and see if the car is still doin this.
