Temp problem. Guages?

Ive been wondering for a while now if my precious is having heating problems but im not sure. im thinking it could be the guage or something. the temperature went all the way to the H yesterday so I pulled over. it had coolant and the engine didnt feel hot like an overheating engine. (the sun was out and it was a very hot afternoon) I drove home and sealed the overflow on the filler neck and took the thermostat out. the sun went down and I took a long hard drive. seemed ok but then it started heating up. pulled over and it didnt feel hot. so I drove on, this time on city streets, stop and go. the guage was sitting right in the middle. wtf. one more thing. my gas guage doesnt work from time to time. has this happend to anyone. I hate being worried all the time.

Put the thermostat back in. Its not like a piston engine. A rotary will over heat without a thermostat. Flush your coolant system, change the thermostat (use only Mazda OEM, not Stant or some other generic type). Also verify that your fan is turning. You do have the plastic sheilds installed right? The help direct air flow into the radiator. Without them, you won't have sufficient cooling.

The gas gauge gets a reading from the sending unit in the tank. It could be not working properly. Intermittent problems are kinda hard to trouble shoot.
