I drove my RX7 from Minnesota to Colorado Springs not too long ago.
Here are some tips:
1. Carry a cheap set of tools. You can get a socket set with ratchet for about 5 bucks at Harbor Freight.
2. Carry 2-3 gallons of water. You can use them for drinking or topping off your radiator in a pinch or even to put into your windshield wiper fluid reservor.
3. Carry jumper cables, flashlight, tire pump, and a tire plug kit (it is easy to plug a flat tire on the road)
4. Carry cell phone
5. If your belts and radiator hoses aren't in great shape, spend the 40 bucks and replace them all.
6. Carry 2-3 quarts of oil. You can top off your vehicle during pit stops. If your car ain't burning any oil then assume OMI pump failure and dump 1 oz per gallon into your fuel tank to get you by on your trip.
7. New windshield wipers are nice to have since that part of country has gotten a ton of rain
8. Carry a spare key with you in case you lose your original set or lock yourself out.
7. Check airpressure in your spare and check to make sure you have a tire jack.
8. Top off your battery with distilled water before your trip. Long drives can cause battery problems if your charging system is charging on the high side.
9. Carry a spare gallon of fuel in truck. Fill up with gas every time you stop. Nothing worse than running out of gas in the california/Nevada desert.
10. Don't forget a good map and as your are driving note where you are by town or mile marker. This way if you breakdown you can call for help and tell them exactly where you are.
11. Stay away from the lot lizards at truck stops unless you want to pick up a STD as a souvenir of your trip.

If you need some help giving your car a tuneup, give me a call. I got pretty fair amount of tools and have an impact wrench and hydraulic jacks etc...etc... I just replaced practically every item that can wear out under fair wear and tear on a vehicle.
If you can afford one, get one of those portable battery jumpers. I had an alternator die on me on another car and I used the juice on that battery to take me 75 miles to a location where I was able to pick up a spare alternator.
If you replace your belts and hoses, don't throw them away. Throw them in the trunk and they can make temporary spare replacement parts if your blow a belt or hose in the future.
