My advice would be to modify the floor of your RX3 to fit the shifter rather than mucking about with changing the shifter... Sheet metal is much easier to work with and wont affect the shifting of your transmission.

There are a couple of threads in the first gen forum that talk about putting a TII tranny in a FB--sounds similar to what you are doing--and I'll be doing it soon. I think setzep or directfreak have done it. Unfortunately the pics were not archived.
Basically you need the shift control box from a 1st gen tranny and the TII shift tube will have to be shortened. To get the shift tube out you have to take off the extension housing from the tranny, it's really not that bad. The first gen shift control box will bolt right on and with the shortened shift tube your in business.
Good luck,
Scott

If you look at the TII tranny and notice where the shifter assembly mounts, you'll notice there are four bolts that mount it to th tranny. You ca relocat it about 4" forward) by just cutting off the front half of the shifter assembly and positioning the rear mounting spot of the assembly to the forward mounting spot of the tranny (tailhousing). You will need to cut the tube also. No sheet metal to muck with and shifting is not affected.

rex4life: shift control box? i have 1.5 n/a trannies, including my old shifter assembly, but im not sure what you mean by shift control box. the bolt pattern on the shifter is different than the one on the new extension housing. i was thinking of just making an adapter
rxheven: yeah i was thinking about that too as someone else suggested it but that is still about 2 inches too far back
