T2 Tranny differences (S4 vs. S5)
Are they the same? I'm looking to replace the tranny in my 91 convertible. Do I need to stick w/ a S5 tranny or will the S4 work just as good? I have a lead on an 87 T2 tranny, but want to make the swap as painless as possible and still end up w/ a good product.
Also, what is a reasonable price for an 87 T2 tranny assuming it all works fine?
thanks!

Ok... to start with, does your convertible have a TII transmission in it now? Because STOCK, it is an NA transmission.
The synchros are better in the Series V, and I THINK it has 1st gear synchros where the Series IV does not. As far as a painless swap, they pretty much interchange. Both bolt up the same, the clutch parts are not the same, but essentially interchangeble as a group... The Series V transmission is BETTER, but the Series IV is fine also.
IF you have an NA transmission currently and are looking to swap to the TII drivetrain, you will need the driveshaft, differential, halfshafts, starter, flywheel, clutch slave cylinder, clutch, pressure plate, and you will have to extend the wires on the wiring harness to the transmission for the neutral safety switch and gear indicator (the one that runs the "shift up" light.)

Differences
The 5th gear in a S5 is taller (lower ratio) than a S4. As to the tranny mounts, if you get BOTH parts of the mount, the mounts are interchangeable.

Strength
should be equivalent between S4 & S5. Certainly equivalent enough for the power of a NA Engine considering a Stock S4 is 180 hp and Stock S5 is 164 hp.
