T2 repair question

There is a guy selling an 87 T2 that has some problems with the engine. I'm wondering how it would take to fix this and how much. Here's what he says:

"Its a 1987 Sunrise Red RX-7 Turbo II with roughly 108k miles on it. I purchased it roughly a year ago, threw in a used Japanese Spec 1990 engine and blew the rear apex seals due to some unforseen reasons. I am willing to sell it as a whole with an edition of all the parts from the original engine (it had problems with a possible crack within the coolant banks of the engine and would pump exhaust into the cooling system) The second engine doesn't run, but the first one does but it just force the coolant out into the resevoir system."

I wondering what it would take to repair both engines actually. One for the RX, and the other my father wants to put into a spitfire. If anyone has seen the Ro-Spit, that's what he wants.

Thanks.

well for the first motor, youd have to rebuild iy and put all new seals in it. lots of work, but a good excuse to port it.
second motor, the one with the coolant problems, is shot. needs new housings, plus a rebuild. very expensive and time consuming for this one. my advice is to say screw trying to rebuild any of the motors, just buya used one from japan. it will be cheaper than rebuilding either one of them, and unless you want to port one of the motors, then its just easier. my two cents though.

You'd have to check the clearance on the housings on both to see if they are rebuildable at all. Gouges with new seals would still suck.

How much would a JSpec engine cost then (and where do you begin to look), and how much to put it in?

It's a tough choice for me. I currently have an 86 GXL, but the T2 would be nice. He's removed the first cat, gutted the second, put on 17" rims, dual 3" RB exhaust, Tokico shocks with Eibach springs... I haven't seen it in person yet because it's back home and i'm at school but he's selling it for cheap and it seems too nice to pass up. I could possibly swap the GXl engine into the T2, but that would leave me with a perfectly fine GXL that might be hard to sell and 2 shot engines.

Any ballpark figures on cost of rebuilding at least one engine so i can see if i can make up the difference? Never really seen a repair bill for an RX.

not sure about exact prices on engines and/or rebuilds. It's gonna be hard to get a good estimate on the rebuilds without knowing what else is wrong with it, but I'm sure someone can give you a nice ballpark figure. About where to get the engine, I know of www.corksport.com They seem to be pretty decent. Not sure who else has them, but again, I'm sure someone can toss in some info for you

Thanks everyone. I've been reading and searching the forum a lot and found a thread saying that if the apex seals blow it may take the turbo out with it. It wasn't too clear about how to tell if the turbo has blown though. How exactly do you tell? It might be the deciding factor about how well i want to get to know the inside of a 13bt engine.
