Do you like shaved side moldings? Check it out!

Just wondernig if everyone agrees with me one LOVING the look of the 7 without the side belt moldings.
Has anyone here done it? just wondering, cause that's a lot of bondo, and I'm a little worried about the final finish.
Let's here the opinions!
Here's a car for example.

I love it! But, the front and rear bumper covers would also have to be shaved for me to do it.

it doesn't look bad, it would be ideal if you could trim the mold off the bumper though. it would give it more of a uniform look

I'd love to do it... but.

I got a quote from an auto body shop that it would take about an hour PER rivet hole to remove the door guards on my '86 GXL (includes drilling out the rivets, welding, sanding, painting).. $$$.

Then of course I would have to get rid of these belt moldings.

Are these just glued to the body?

my friend has done it to his 7. He just had his auto body shop remove the stips. Without filling. It looks better in my opinion than filling in and better that having the strips there.

I bet the belt moldings would be twice the pain to
remove from the nose and rear bumper versus
the carbody(sheet metal)

I took that second picture. The car looked good - from more than 10 feet away. But even the owner admitted that it didn't work out like he had hoped. There were quite a few cracks in the bondo. In short, I'd never do that to my car unless it's a show only car. If you drive it, it'll crack.

Nah

I thought about it for a minute, then the negatives just sort of seemed to outweigh the positives...

1. I'd have to do metalwork - adding bondo is Just Plain Wrong, from weight and durability to the ability to make it look right all around.

2. I'd have to do the bumpers (maybe with a full body kit or something I might do it).

3. It just doesn't look quite right to me. Looks more like a 944.

I'm gonna treat and paint mine, I think - you could do something artsy with the side moulding, though, complementary color or a moulding-only flame-job (maybe make the moulding metallic and the rest of the car not...?).

I absolutely love it. But if it will crack I wouldn't do it. I was thinking of doing it myself but not if its gunna crack and ****. It does make the car look 10x more up-to-date though. O ya, what kind of sideskirts are those? I never really see any good pic of the sideskirts when places are selling them. Thanks.

There was a guy with a black 7 who did this, it looks really nice. It does make the car more modern looking, and I might do it.

If you were dead set on doing it right and didn't car about the labor. You could cut the section with the dip out and weld in smooth metal, sand and paint. You would probably want to paint the whole car at the same time. ALOT OF WORK but it wouldn't crack

Well, this was my opinion too- Looks great, but maybe not practical.
Man, that's a beautiful car though.... I wonder if that rear wing is bondo'd in place or if it's just the regular stick on.
Too bad there isn't an easier way.

I have a pretty good freind in the paint and body feild of work, and he told me to shave the side moldings he would weld a strp of metal over it, sand the welds, body fill the imperfections and sand, then primer and paint. He said that way i wouldnt crack or peel off bc its just like filling up dents. I hope this helps someone

How much do you think a place would want to weld in a piece of metal? A rough estimate would be nice. Thanks alot.

what are you planning to do about the bumpers? they aren't metal, so you can't weld a piece of metal on it, because you'd melt it. there is a kind of marine bondo that this one guy did on his car. I'll resize the pictures and post them up in a few minutes.

im sure no one would try to weld the front and back bumpers, there are other ways for that, i was just talking about the metal peices such as the fenders and doors and **** like that.
