Question T2 owners:

Here's a question for you guys:

When you are sitting still, and you rev the engine pretty hard up to 3-5k, do you get boost? Hell, if you rev it at all, do you get boost? Or, do you have to be moving? I only get boost above 3k and I have to be hauling *** to do it. I was thinking I have a vacuum leak or something, but I wanted to get your guys opinions before I go nuts ripping apart the hoses.

Thanks!

You should only get boost with the engine under load.

I was just reading through some old posts about full boost and it sounds like you might have clogged cats. I don't think you should have to be at WOT to start making boost. The after 3000 rpms part might be right. Is your car stock?

For the most part... I am waiting ever-so-patiently for my Racing Beat turbo back exhaust, which would take care of clogged cats. I was also reading about the twin scroll turbo system... If mine is non-functional, would that explain it?

I know that if you have a opened up exhaust and intake you can get boost by just revving the motor to say 5 grand. My 10th AE does it with just a opened up exhaust. My friends 95 will do it also but he has a intake on it as well as a opened up exhaust. Plus i have a after market blow off valve..and he has a stcok BOV but it is sent up to vent to atmosphere..oh and his is fairly loud.

you don't get any reving. I start getting boost around 2000 in 5th but only 1-2 psi. don't get full boost till 3000 or a bit later.

I have a blitz blow off valve that vents to atmosphere... But I was reading that the twin scroll system helps low end boost, so I am wondering if mine works or not.

my factory boost gauge moves from -20 to some where near -10 or -5 i guess... never really paid attension... i doubt u would be able to get above zero (vacuum) just sitting there and reving it.

if u want boost get an anti-lag system...

It takes a least a couple of seconds at full throttle to reach max boost. What happens if you do that when the car’s out of gear? You exceed redline well before you reach max boost! A load on the engine is required to keep the engine speed down so you can apply full throttle.
Ther's nothing wrong with your car.

I get reasonable boost at part throttle below 3000rpm... stock t2 with something of an aftermarket exhaust.

yeah dude, your cars fine. the turbo wont make boost unless the engine is having to work. you prolly wont see full boost untill later in the RPM range but you alctualy build positive manifold pressure as soon as the engine is under load. ive never heard of an anti-lag system, what is it? i know electronic boost controlers are supposed to help spool up time though.

It’s used to keep the turbo spinning during gear changes. Air is injected directly into the exhaust manifold (via specific piping) while the ECU dumps extra fuel, but with no spark. The fuel/air mix explodes in the hot exhaust manifold which spins the hell outta the turbo. The result is off-throttle boost! You also get a huge bang out the exhaust and flames that would make any rotary owner very envious! It’s unsuitable for a road car because it’s very hard on the turbo and is highly illegal. If you watch WRC, you’ll be familiar with anti-lag; all the rally cars use it.

Very true.

My 90 wont boost in neutral. However Ive seen silvias rev and keep poping their BOVs. It looks kinda fun, too bad for me.

If you rev your TII in neutral, you should see an increased pressure, just not that much. While I was testing my -as it turns out broken - turbo last week, the turbo does spool up (how else could it be ? the exhaust gases still have to go through the exhaust turbine), but in neutral the engine revvs up pretty quickly, so it doesnt have the time to build up enough pressure...

But if you have a very loud aftermarket BOV, you could hear it blow off even in neutral, just pressing and letting go of the gas pedal....Also removing the intake/exhaust restrictions could make the turbo noticeably louder and a bit faster...
