T2 bell housing interchangeability?

Searched some, no results though

Can I mate an S5 T2 bell housing to an S4 gear box? Thank you

Link doesn't seem to help the bellhousing question...

From what I understand, the S4 and S5 are not very different externally. There's an extra bellhousing bolt or so, a bulge in the tail section to accommodate a balancing weight on the output shaft, and different transmission crossmember as a result (on the S5). Internally, very different ratios.

What's confusing me, though, is the bellhousings. bumpstart points out that the S4 bellhousing is actually not separable from the main body of the transmission

And my own S4 transmission pretty much agrees

But the FSM says otherwise? (http://foxed.ca/rx7manual/manuals/1988FSM/07a_MANUAL_TRANSMISSION.pdf)

Granted, my car is an 87 model and the FSM is for 88 models. But does anyone knowledgeable want to chip in?

Yea I stumbled on that S4 V S5 thread in my searches, but there wasn't a defined bell housing interchange answer.

pzr2- INTERESTING!! That must be from a real early T2, as my S4 box here has a replaceable bell housing. The early T2s had plenty of odd ball mech stuff- diff stub shafts stuck out ~3/4" further, thus = shorter axles. non-interchangeable turbine housings w/ later 87 & up housings, odd coolant "AST" tank up front...

I ran a mixed-series bell-housing and gearbox for years with no issues. I think I had a series 5 bell housing on a series 4 trans. There was one hole in the bell housing that could not be used with the s4 trans, all the other holes lined up. I ended up filling the unused hole with RTV since I was unsure if that area would be exposed to gear oil and I didn't want to risk a leak in that area.

Looks like we have our answer. The link I posted just said it had "extra" bolt holes. I figured it meant that the pattern as a whole was different
