Unhappy swapping a TII in a 88 gtu.

ok, i just read through all of the postings. I own an 88 gtu and was thinking about dropping a 93 TT engine until i heard from everyone it is a bad idea. I think i will decide to put in a TII instead. should i get the 86-88 motor or the 89-91. i do not know which is better or easier to intall. which ever i do get, im going to upgrade the turbo, so which would be the best bet. thanks.

go with the 87-88 tii...since you have an 88 already, it will be a "straight" drop, plug-n-drive deal...

yep, its just that easy! Different wiring harness? Different drivetrain all the way back to the rear halfshafts?

It would be easier with the the same series though.

Holy **** man, with under 3000 you can deffinatly do it. Get a TII block and manifolds, TII trans (not nessisary but it'll be better) and a driveshaft from and automatic N/A car. You can use the stock harness and ECU you will just have to use some sort of piggy back to control the fuel. Exhaust will be another problem, but you can use some of your stock exhaust, just take the car to an exhaust shop once you have it all in and tell them to weld you some **** in. But with a straight through exhaust watch out for boost creep, which is why you should port out the wastegate. Its damn easy man. You will need a TII hood unless you want to run a FMIC (you can re-plumb the stock IC to be Front mount if you want, just hang it up and have the same exhaust shop do the plumbing for you from the turbo to the TB and such). There you go, im sure you can do it for under 3000. Accually.. just give me the 3K, the car, and ill do it. good luck

well, who says ts cheaper to buy a T2, if its gonna keep him under 3000 then it shouldnt be cheaper, all the TII's ive seen go for 4.5k+ down here, i was dying to find one, but intead i got my 86 gxl, and i paid 1.5k for it, i was willing to spen about 3k as well.

you would be modifying a lot of stuff that is not worth it. If you have a friend to do it for a cheap price, its all good. It would be easier to drop a 3 rotor in it than a 93.

Honestly, I don't think its an incredibly easy swap. When mine was done into my convertible, I had a good vert and a good TII to start with. If you try to piece it together and plan on passing emmissions or anything, you will have quite a job ahead of you.

If you really know your way around an rx-7, you have easy access to parts, and aren't in a rush, $3,000 should get you there pretty easily. Lol, if you want to cheat on the rear end, I think I still have a machined flange to attach a TII drive shaft to the stock na diff saved me some time till I could get the gears I wanted for the TII rear end). If I can find it and you need it, I can sell it to you cheap. On a side note, I bought my first TII running with a decent body for $2300.

When my conversion was done, I had to have 3 cars, lol. The TII, the Vert, and a daily driver so I could get to work and my classes (I was still in college then).

In any case, good luck. Its a fun project where you will learn a lot about your car.
