Hey all. I'm finally getting my tranny! Woo-hoo!!! It has 49,000 miles on it and is in perfect shape, according to the seller. He said he last used Redline Synthetic gear oil in it. Should I continue using that once I get the tranny, or should I use the regular stuff? How will it perform differently vs. conventional gear oil? Are there any pros or cons? Any input from anyone with experience on this matter would be appreciated. Thanks!

 

Redline is awsome, no cons, all pros. All of my gears were a little rough, wit 3'rd being a problem sometimes, and 5'th a little less often, a few quarts of redline, and everything's good again. And as far as I can tell, it's at least as good as the day I made the switch, if not better, probably better.

I picked up Redline Diff Synth Additive about a year ago. There was a caution on the back that synthetics should NOT be used with a brand new sys cuz it will actually extended and possibly screw-up the break-in period. But with 49k on it that shouldn't be an issue for you - you're way past it.

Use Redline MT-90. NOT MTL.

 

Absolutely use the Redline MT-90. The only downside is the price, but since 3 qts will last you 30,000 - 60,000 miles, the overall operating cost isn't really very expensive.

I remember when my friend put redline fluid in his tranny on his Probe GT, they recommended mixing the two, it was like 2 qt mt-90 and 1qt MTL, or mabe the other way around, cant remember. Anyone heard of this before?

 

Who is 'they' and why?
No mixing needed.
MTL is used in manual trannies that need ATF.
MT-90 is used in manual trannies that need GL4 75-80/90.

MTL is 70w80.
MT-90 is 75W90.

My FSM says to use 75w90 or 80w90. Guess which one I use? It doesn't get cold enough around here for MTL.

 

Nothing wrong with REDLINE, but you should know me by now. I use NEO SYNTHETIC. Both products are great!

 

Ok I'm pretty much convinced now. I went out yesterday to Baxter's Auto Parts and bought 3 quarts of Redline MT-90. This stuff better be what it's cracked up to be, at $8.75 a quart. Now all I need to for my tranny to get here...

I dunno who, I guess all the guys on the probe forums. I was just asking, never heard of that before.

 

You found the "con". Pricey stuff. don't have to change it very often though. I use the readline as well. I like how the trans doesn't get as stiff in cold weather.
