surging temp gauge s5na

my temp gauge gets up to about a bit past 3/4 then drops to half then rises again to 3/4 and drops when i turn it off the gauge goes all the way to hot. could i have air in my cooling system? thats what im thinking could do this or some kind of fd up thermostat. at first i thought it was the timing and thats what caused it to heat up but i got that to spec and still doing it.

check your Coolant Level first of all. When it is COLD..Take the Cap off at the highest Point on the System(I believe that would be the Thermostat neck). If there is air,and the coolant is low, then the gauge is going to fluctuate and show it by Going all Weird on ya.Timing has Nothing to do with your Temperature gauge.

Believe it or not, I've seen an alternator that was going bad and the voltage regulating incorrectly cause the temperature gauge to jump like this.

This seems to be a problem with the gauge circuit- sending unit, wiring or gauge itself- rather than the cooling system (although you may have a cooling issue as well, there's no way of knowing till you get a functioning gauge).
A normal S5 gauge shows halfway while running, a S4 about 1/4- but neither of them should peg out when off.

Either install an aftermarket temp gauge (preferable) or fix the stocker, then see what happens.

Edit: @ Gringo...was the temp gauge the only one affected?
Seems like a bad alternator would screw with all the gauges, not just the water...

ty for all the input. well as far as the alt it tested good but the wiring was fubar so i rewired it.that wasnt it. the gauge and sending unit are all good. i do in fact have a cooling problem cause after the gauge showed she was heating up the overflow was boiling. today after work i am going to pull the thermostat and swap clutchfan. would air in the system cause that. how can i bleed the system.

just get as much coolant into the engine's cooling system as possible...I just did a rad swap, and Frankly,I thought it was going to be hard as hell, with bleeding the System..I let the Car start to get hot.the Shut it down.then came back later, popped the Cap off(highest Point) and let it run again,Filled it,sealed it up and let it Run with the Heater on Full tilt..it Worked out fine..you may have to squeeze the upper and lower had hoses a couple times, but that isn't too difficult...Don't Turn this Job into a Complicated one..it's like any other car..IF you find the Car won't bleed then Jack the FRONT of the Car up..run it,shut it down, and Wait half a day..the air will Rise in the cooling system and make it's way out...Good Luck again.STYX...Oh the Second Link was: Bleeding the Cooling System(punched in Under Search)

worst case scenario

so i have been searching relentlessly for an answer to my temp gauge problem when in fact the gauge and related components are working fine. what ive come to find is i may have a bad coolant seal . what a bummeras i just bought this motor from a local import shop and he assured be it ran and it does for a while till it drinks up some coolant and then starts to get hot. theres not really any white smoke on start up but when she is idling i pull the rad cap off and i get bubbles.

then Find a place that will pressure test your cooling system..They basically Pressurize the system to the Recommended Pressure(about 13psi) then Look at the Pressure gauge to see if it goes down...if it Falls then you know there is a Leak somewhere in the system....Now,you said you bought the Engine from a Import shop.you should see if they have a Start up warranty....anyhow,Good luck with it..I hope that I at least helped you a Bit..Cheers,STYX.
