Common problem... Dirt and crud messes up the tracks after 21 some odd years. (Wow... Kids born when your car was in the showroom are now legally able to drink alcohol... And I remember Mazda commercials during my Saturday morning cartoons...)

Lemmie find the writeup on how to dismantle the tracks and clean them out for another couple decades of service.

Both of those have a procedure to repair, however neither includes pictures.

Its a bit of a common practice on these to have to give the sunroof a bit of a push to get it started opening.

I had good luck just taking the panel itself off(takes 5 minutes), and brake cleaning/ wd40/ greasing the rails, opens quite fast now.

The panel probably needs to be removed so the tracks can operate individually, and if I recall correctly, you can at least start getting some cleaner in both tracks. Per the first link Pele posted:

Instructions motor removal and repair:
------------------------------------------------
Step 1: Pull the head liner down so you have enough access to the motor as well as the sun roof panel. If you wish (and I highly recommend it) remove the liner from the sun roof panel as well. This will insure that you have easy access to everything you need and are able to determine which pieces may need shims later on.

Step 2: Remove the sun roof panel by unbolting the 6 nuts (3 on each side) so that the track assemblies can operate independently.
If you're decent with electronics, you may also wish to install relays to the sunroof. I haven't done this to mine yet, but I have seen videos of relays installed in the circuitry of sunroofs and power windows and the speed and ease with which they operate is incredible.

I don't want to say it all again, but here's what happened to me:
