Suddenly no starter. Whack a mole started car....

Yeah, failed starter IF you had batt voltage going to the large cable on the starter solenoid and there's no reason to think it suddenly disappeared.
Might I suggest you do what 959595 suggested?
When you remove the starter put it on a table. Get some jumper cables out. The neg jumper cable from the batt neg post to an ear on the starter mounting ...ear. Then put the positive jumper cable to the stud you just removed the battery cable from when you removed the starter. Now all you need is a way to jumper power to the small trigger blade on the solenoid so jumper power from the batt pos post to there. Starter if any good will spin. If not good the trigger jumper wire will just make a small sparking when you touch the small trigger blade and no starter action will happen.
Or if memory serves.......neg jumper to one of the ears of the attach mount..........positive cable touched quickly to the threaded post on the solenoid that DID NOT HAVE A CABLE connected to it when it was installed. Starter will spin on a good starter. Might arc a bit on that threaded stud and make removing the nut on that stud a bit difficult later.
