If done properly with fiberglass a sub in the storage bins CAN sound good because of the rounded design of the carpet in the bin... just not LOUD with the lid open... with the lid half closed its louder but still not as loud as an enclosure in the rear of the car.

I didn't see anyone mention it (not that I read carefully), but speakers where the spare is. Would this cause the same sound problems as putting them in the storage bins?
the spare tire area is 1000% better than the bins.

The cancellation from the bin area just sucks the bass out of the system, so that you need twice the power and three times the speaker to get the same bass that is available when properly loaded behind the rear shock towers.

Of course that doesn't even address the poor quality of the bass when the speakers are mounted at the bin area.

But for some people quality of the sound is not as important. For them the bins or some pre-made particle board enclosure with tweeters is probably fine

What if the speakers mounted in the bins, faced back at an angle toward the rear?

Better put (I hope)...

If you open the lid of the bin, about a 1/3 of the way, and imagine the speakers sitting at that angle (which should stop the cancellation of the bass, if aimed properly) would only hurt space slightly, and should sound decent, assuming a proper box was built for them..

Mark, opinion?

Thats almost exaclty what i said in my post... If you leave the bin open 1/3 or so open it stops the cancelation and sounds louder

Maybe if the bin lid was re-enforced and faced towards the rear it would help.

Yeah, I'm thinking remove the bin/lid totally, and put a 1/2" high density fiberboard box in it's place, with a lip so that it can attach to the fiberglass piece that the bins do, with the sub facing at an angle of somewhere in the 33-45* range. I'll do some experimenting, but I think it may work out decently.

jager, if you want to make some boxes, this might be a better idea then just firing them straight up, perhaps still not ideal, but definitely much more efficient then the alternative.

Yeah, I doubt the sound would be great by any means, just a little more efficient then straight up. Regardless, it's an RX7, why do you need subs anyway?

Just get one good 8 or 10" sub and make a proper box out of 3/4" MDF and put it in the back.

why dont you get some bazooka subs type thing. and arrange some tweeters around. my brother has a firebird 98, more or less the same interior setup as the rx7 and he put the subs in the bin with the amp, and has his stock radio.. but then again, his stock radio is nice even without the bazooka. it just gives it a little thump. cuz of the shape of the car, sounds alot better than my old civic, and i have 3 13 inch Xplodes... i think they were 13 inch or maybe 14.. i forgot. but yeat.

I just like subwoofers also because I love music. The reason I want to make these is to have the stealth effect so they don't get jacked as easy and have them in a secure place. I like that angle idea. Any further input would be great.

I've heard 10's that a guy had mounted in the bins with custom boxes that fit to the curves and all, and they sounded horrible... There's not enough air space in a box that small to provide good bass. I've heard 8's that a guy had mounted in the bins same setup and they sounded a little bit better, really punchy, but that's about the best you can do with so little air space in a box that small imo. A friend of mine has a box built that fits in the spare tire space and it sounds pretty good...much better then the bins, it's one 10 kicker... but still not amazing.. not worth leaving the spare at home for.. I got a 12" JL in a bandpass box and it sounds pretty good, but the box is massive and weighs a ton... I'd like to downsize a bit, but I've yet to hear a setup I like.... I'd love to hear how those boxes that spyders got going sound....

well the amount of space required depends on the sub. i know 10"alpine type-e subs are really good with 1.5cubic feet.

there should be enough space in the back where the spare tire goes.. i think, thats where my bro put his bazooka thing. it looks like one huge cylinder with two woofers on the ends. and it sounds pretty good.

Has anybody here especially the poster concidered Fiberglassing the Rear Shock towers( to seal It) and add a set of 8inch sub's (not mids) subs. And then mount some tweets there also... sounds good... (doesn't rumble your ***) but does sound good. you still need an amp and a good set of tweets but it is a good way togo if you don't want to scrifice alot of area and just want the added sound.

I put an 8 inch Vega Sub-tube in my '93 REX with a 200 watt Alpine amp.
I placed the sub-tube just under the rear strut brace, where it fit perfectly, then used 2" wide velcro doubled over and placed on the rear deck carpet just where the sub-tube fit.
The velcro keeps the tube from rolling on acceleration & braking.

For the Head unit, I have a Kenwood Excelon XC815 CD; Alpine Amp & Vega 8" Sub Tube, Boston Acoustic Pro' 6.5's in the doors and Boston Acoustic Rally 6's in the rear. Great sound.....with some sub-tube controls in the head unit....easy to adjust while driving.

Im also planning something not only for the boxes, but for the rear part of the hatch. Its in design at the moment. It should be ready within a week.

well once my 7 is running, im going to hook up a stealth setup systems. tweets inside the side vents right by the driver's and pass doors. and two seperate 14s in the back with an angled box on each side of the back where you wont notice them. thinking about putting them in front of the struts in the back with custom boxes, or set them up where the spare tire goes with a box that elevates it to sit flat with angled box the levels out with the rest of the trunk. i've done that with my bro's other car. didnt really notice it all that much.
