I had some friends who used to be into them...IIRC theyre around 220hp, v6, awd, and the transmissions SUCK *** and are about $4000 each. Theyre fast as ****, I once raced one in my old Celica and it wasnt eve n funny...my 89 gtu would beat the celica good, but not that good, so Id say theyre about as fast as a t2, even if you get the automatic trans.

 

The boxer V-6 in those cars are nice. Plus they have those weird windows that you can supposedly roll all the way down in the rain and not get wet.

 

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I've been told that the SVX was only available with an automatic tranny...

Doesn't make much sense considering it's supposed to be a "sporty" car, though.

 

I've heard that they only came automatic also.. I had a friend with one of them (totalled now).. they came with 220HP.. i think the 0-60 was 8+ secs!!!!

 

they're not "REAL FAST" cars dude.. they're heavy as *****, and I'm pretty sure they never came with manuals. 220hp and they weigh something around 3500+ lbs I *think*

 

This is correct, they had automatics that would shift at redline when you stomped on it, but so does my mom's Grand Cherokee so woo woo. They are very heavy because they have a bunch of bells and whistles and were considered the "luxury" Subaru.

The SVX wasn't supposed to be a pure sports car, it was a luxury sports coupe.These sit at 100mph just as well as at 30mph!

ever since my t2 caught on fire and was totalled about 2 months ago, ive been driving my dads 93 svx. he bought it brand new, 93 was the anniversary edition. only came in one model, deep red color, anniversary badges. all svx's were 230 hp ( i guess it could be 226, but ive always known 230), all automatics. i can't remember if they were all AWD though, but mine is. they get up and go pretty good. it was as fast as my t2, we raced a couple times, although i would eventually catch and pass him. but when you mash it, it definitely goes. i must say, it is a nice cruising car, all the bells and whistles. no problems with the tranny yet, but rear wheel bearings always go out. other than that, its got 120,000 miles on it and barely any problems. very reliable. its a fun car, and the windows are unique. however, they don't always keep the rain out.

Back a few years ago I raced my old Honda del Sol 1.5 liter, and the SVX was put in the same class as me. I was pissed at first since I knew it was 220 HP and AWD versus my FWD 106 HP semi-convertable.

When I consistantly got better lap times I forgot about it. Yeah, driver could have a lot to do with it, but if you're spending the $$$ to take the car to the track they are at least going to try. I can't say I am all that great of a driver either. At the time I was 21 and it was only my second track event. Stock del Sol with cat-back and K&N drop-in. That was all.

 

svx's are NOT as fast as T2's. i raced one in my 91 NA with really light mods and pulled away.

Uhmmm, Boxer V-6........well if you wanna call it a 180degree V that would work, but the cylinders are directly opposed Anyway, they are ugly as baws and are way under-powered for a car as obese as they are. Now my sisters AWD Subaru XT6 Turbo......that was a blast to drive. I can't remember if the turbo was stock or if she had it added later, but it had one and it was FAST! Until she slid it along a guard rail at 120 all the way around a long curve Oh well.

 

now that i think about it, when i did race my dad in the svx with my t2, we were already on the freeway, so i had some lag, but i did catch up. i never tried it from a stop. probably would have got him there.

My step sister owns a 95 svx and we g-teched it at around 7 sec 0-60. yes all svxs are AUTOMATIC and yes they are all AWD.

 

A friend of mine has an SVX. I liked them, until he got his. They are very heavy and underpowered. He ran 18.1 1/4, that was at Bandimere (Colorado) so probably 17.1 at sea level. He has the AWD model, I believe it's a '92. The first couple years they were offered as either fwd or awd, the fwd runs a few tenths quicker in the 1/4 but is still pretty damn slow. The fwd model was discontinued in 94 or 95, whatever year Subaru decided that all cars they build will only be available as awd. As was stated earlier the transmissions are a major problem. When Subaru built the SVX they had never made a car with the kinds of HP numbers it had. The automatic transmission was the beefiest thing they had and was still barely adequate to handle the power. The SVX has a system that shuts down a couple cylinders during shifting. They say to make it a smoother feeling shift, I think it was because the tranny couldn't handle the power during shifts.

1st, yes our car was produced only w/ an automatic and our trannies are VERY expensive however, thanks to modern technology we have created a manual svx (http://www.smallcar.com/svx/5speed.htm)


2nd it comes with 230 hp and is awd. comes in handy for racing in the snow

They are very heavy, but I never saw one go from 0-60 in 11 seconds!!!!
I don't know where those numbers came from...
Also- I have here an old Popular Science, in which one was tested against a Volkswagon, and a few others.- and went from 0-60 in 7 seconds.....
It also has a maunal tranny!
The are very heavy cars- but they credited the decent acceleration time to the fact that the shift from 2nd to third takes place at about 62 MPH.... So it has the advatage in timing by not needing to shift gears twice, only once in a 0-60 run!

 

It's a sweet car. I traded my TII for one, then traded the SVX for an FD. I'm glad I have the FD, but I also really miss the SVX. The factory stereo is amazing, the climate control is the most intuitive that I've seen to date, the interior is first rate(suede dash, leather seats, very low wind noise, excellent quality throughout, save for the fake wood).
The engine is overbuilt and conservatively rated at 230. They have been bench dynoed at over 250 from the factory. The transmission is a weak point, but I never had a problem with mine. I used to routinely drive it around in manual mode-holding 1st or 2nd gear. If you put it in first and floor it the computer will take it right to redline then snap it into 2nd with authority. No substitute for manual, but still fun.
It's best enjoyed on the highway. I imagine an FD or FC will stomp it from a stop but I'd like to see how one fairs from 70-120.
Also they are very safe. My uncle, who traded his 928GTS for one was rear ended by a drunk drive at 70mph at a stop light and walked out.

They have terrible resale value which makes them a steal to buy used. slap a turbo on it, cut 300lbs off the curb weight, install a manual and it's near perfect-imo

The SVX is not suppose to compete w/ an RX7. They are in different markets. You can't just compare the two...apples and oranges. It is a very nice car, but it has its quirks (such as premature transmission failure)...same as the RX7. You guys should check out mor einfo on the SVX page (http://www.subarusvx.com/). I was going to buy one about 5 years back but selected on a Eclipse GST instead. Here are some info:

Engine: 3.3-liter 24-valve 6-cylinder horizontally opposed

1/4 Mile: 15.4 seconds @ 92.5 mph
Skidpad: 0.85 g
Top Speed: 143 mph

And, not all SVX's are AWD. All the earlier ones (96 and lower, I think) were AWD; later models had FWD w/ AWD on upscale trims. All SVX's are AT. They are not that slow. They are meant to be touring vehicles that can transport 4 people in somewhat comfortable fashion...The drawback is that they have very few aftermarket parts...other than exhaust, intake, and limited suspension upgrades. I don't know of any other such as turbo/supercharger kits, ECU, etc...

I used to have a friend who used to have one.&nbsp My lightly modded FC turbo slightly beat him in 1st and 2nd gear, but that SVX 3rd gear caught up to me in a hurry!
