Stupid question about the shifting knob...

Stupid question about the shifting ****...

Hey, i have a standard car, and today, i went to throw it in reverse, and I physically couldn't move the **** to the left past 3/4th gear.. So i pop the "sorta boot" (i.e., totall deteriorated boot that's on there until i can afford to get the set ), and i see it's out of fluid, here's my question.. . I know when i went over the car, i filled it with 90 gear oil, i was wondering what the detremental(sp?) side effects of using something like ATF on it would be? would it shift smoother, or would it leak out?

Years ago when the 2nd generation came out, there were problems shifting in cold climates. Some Mazda dealers would install ATF to correct the problem, but it just didn't lubricate properly. Synthetic is the best of both worlds.

so, you're saying use a synthetic 90weight or a synthetic motor oil? i'll see if my shops have royal purple t/w...

rx-7fc - I think it's because it's outta oil... at least, I'm hoping it is.. any better suggestion?

Did you check if the little spring came off its hinge and preventing the stick from moving ?

it might have to do with the spring thing or just take a the boot off and you can see a bolt the size is 3/4 and losing it and if you can move the sifter it is that

I know when I changed my shifter bushings, I knocked off one of the springs, and it wouldn't shift for crap. Then, when I put it back on, it still shifted sketchy. Well, I got pissed off, slammed it into 2nd, and ever since it has shifted like butter. Also, as for lubricant, when I had a clutch job done the shop put like a graphite bases gel in the shifter and it has worked pretty well for lubrication...

thanks for the pic, it's really helpful, but i can't see the spring at all, .. I only have the top bushing there, i don't have the bottom one, but i didn't see how anything can be keeping it from moving.. do i have to empty out the oil i just put in it? Any good suggestions for how to get at it, or am i going to have to drop the tranny ?

rico.. .i tried that, it did it to me earlier this week i slammed it over and it worked fine for a week, this time i'm not strong enough

rx7fc - are you talking about that little rod that the slot goes around to prevent lateral spin?

damn, gotta get to work, thanks for all the info guys!

there is this bolt in the back it is closer to the drivers side just take the boot off and look down and you should see it just loosen it the size is 3/4 just use a open end wrench

well, i followed the instructions with the spring, and It seems to want to shift fine now, but when i was bolting the top metal gasket that holds down the ****, ALL 3 SCREWS BROKE!!! after the first one went, i thought maybe it was because i was using an air rachet, so i did the second one, i barely put any pressure on it at all and it broke.. so, i figured i'd do the last one, what's the chance of 3 bolts breaking at the same time? pretty good aparently.. . i hate my life...
