Strong, Reliable, Fair Priced: Recomendations for a clutch...

I currently have a stock soft clutch in my 1987 RX-7. It is N/A but does have modifications for more power and performance. I need to know any recomendations for a good strong clutch that will not burn out from high rpm take offs... I found a stage 3 F1 on Ebay for 139 dolars and I've been told they do not handle well with RX-7's... So please just let me know what brand, type, and prices ya'll think are my best options. Thankyou.

Personally i would convert to a TII setup if you plan to beat the car at all. I replaced a clutch and 500miles later i blew my trans. Do it right the first time and you wont spend more $$ and time the second trip around

Im in the process of converting to a t2 transmission as well, it seems a better solution. Probably pricier than rebuilding and strengthening the N/A tranny, but stronger overall and if you ever decide to go with a turbo swap, you've got almost all you need. Sorry to digress, this is a clutch recommendation thread. With that in mind I wouldn't go to aggressive, its pointless in an N/A, even with performance mods. Centerforce is pretty neat, but has a soft clutch feel like the stocker. ACT seems to be the most popular favorite for economy and performance.....

I did my entire trans swap with new starter and a low mileage clutch and resurfaced flywheel for well under $400

If you are doing a whole lot of high RPM drops, you could stick with the stock pressure plate but get a non-organic material clutch. That will hold up better.

I personally like the Clutchmasters kit. When replacing it remember to also get a pilot bearing seal from mazda.

A TII trans will hold the power better, but for high rpm launches you would probably still want a non-organic disk.

So far, a local store has offered me a stage 1 ACT clutch for $220. I am still looking to see what I will settle for though...

ACT doesn't market their products by stages. What does "stage 1" mean at your local store? Is that the ZX2-HDSS kit?

Yes, ACT makes SS, G4, G6, R4, and R6 clutches for the NA RX-7. It's just the flywheel, MM clutch, and XX pressure plate that they make for the TII and not the NA.

It seems like you know nothing about your car or clutches. My advice is that you should get an OEM replacement clutch from exedy and put that in there. It will cost you like $130 from any local shop. It will hold up fine to all your high rpm clutch drops(clutch kicks).

Why not just go with the OEM Exedy clutch kit if your gonna throw on a crappy ebay clutch? I bought the kit on Amazon for <$100 a few months ago.

I am just repeating what the guy behind the counter told me... he said it was considered a stage 1 and could hold up to 268 horse power. All in all, I think I will be better off ordering one online...

Yes, I gathered that. You need to find out exactly what that means if you want to compare it to other products.

It sounds like you also need to research clutches and pressure plates a little better. See the write-up at the Mazdatrix website:

OK, that was the basic ZX2-HDSS kit like I thought. It is rated for 268 lb-ft torque, not horsepower.

I prefer shopping locally due to warranty and technical support reasons, as well as helping to keep local shops in business. However, if the local shop prices are simply too high, and/or they have lousy support, then online is a better choice.
