strong fuel/gas smell comin from exhaust

Lately my fc tii has been smoking excessively and has also been smelling like fuel/gas when car starts cold. It also takes a long time to idle when cold. Also the engine idles roughly and erratically. Also been having trouble when starting. It does start, just doesn't seem to start correctly. It is as if the car is not getting a strong spark to the engine. Could having a bad clutch cylinder be a factor? I had thought about a rebuild, but the car's performance is good at times, and bad at others. Not sure why? But what I do know is that when car is performing well, it is running very strong, which makes me think it doesn't need a rebuilt yet.

Uhm.. I'm pretty sure its not your clutch system....

What have you checked already? I would check plugs. make sure you are getting good spark from both coils... if its an S4, make sure your fuel ratio is set as per the FSM. You could have injectors stuck open... causing a rich fuel mixture... lots of things could be wrong. I suggest you search the forum. .there's got to be some similar stuff already tackled.
