Stress creak in the rear.
Stress creak in the rear.
I installed a midpipe about a month ago and alternated jacking up each rear corner to get it up on jackstands and now when I go over a speed bump at an angle or in/out of a slope at an angle I get a creaking sound at the very rear of the car.
It's a bit annoying because I'm sort of finicky about this stuff.
What is it and what can I do to fix/repair it. I don't really care about the cost - can it be fixed? Thanks...

I've got a creak as well. It doesn't seem to happen until after about 10 minutes of running. Just had new KYB shocks and springs installed, but noise still there. I have had the entire rear end gone over a few times and can't find the noise source. Only happens when you hit the brake at low speeds, but it is not anything in the brakes, those have been checked as well. It's almost a rubber creaking noise. All donuts are fine, too, though.
I will check with the rear hatch open and see if that is the cause. Thats about the only thing that hasn't been done. I'm just baffled at what is causing it. Almost don't know where else to look.

If you have a 'mini-spare' check that the locking bolt has not worked loose - the tire mounts against metal and if loose can create the most awful squeeking as the rubber rubs against the rear metal frame - check it out!
Thanks, ianbell, that was something I've looked into as well. I've checked and made sure the spare is in there tight. Actually, I had the spare out for awhile and if I remember, the noise was there while the tire was out.
It appears the rubber moldings could be the culprit. I have yet to open my hatch to see if that cures the noise, but will be doing it shortly. If that stops the noise then from what I see in the Victoria British catalog it could be that the rubber moldings are the culprit. I am going to inspect my rear strut braces as well and from what I see either those or the moldings are the only thing that could be the problem. I will let you all know if opening the hatch stops the noise.
Well, opening the hatch does not solve the problem for me, so neither the strut braces nor the rubber molding are the cause. The noise I have still appears and only when going forward under about 10 mph. Doesn't happen in reverse. I continue to be stymied.
I discovered the source of my creaking tonite.
I live in a secured condo complex and we've got some small speed bumps. Tonite, just as I was entering the gate I decided to flip my hatch lever and it opened about a foot or so. I then proceeded to drive over 3 or 4 speed bumps at an angle to get the rear to creak. Not a peep other than normal spring compression.
So tomorrow, I think I'll see if I can tighten the hatch somehow and armor-all the rubber trim around the hatch area. I'm glad it's not the metal creaking back by the taillights. I was afraid jacking the car too high on one side had f*#@ed up the structural integrity. These cars have pretty good torsional rigidity.

Glad you found the source. I can induce the noise while moving very slowly and gently tapping the brakes. It comes and goes as you tap and release the pedal. I've had the brakes, bearings, everything possible back there checked so I know its not brake related. Even checked all the rubber donuts out. Tomorrow I will pop the hatch while moving slowly and see what ocurrs.
You can tighten the latches....I got rid of a popping sound (loose hatch) in my '87 that way. You could just apply some silicone lube or vaseline to the rubber though. It won't take very much.

Thanks
The latches are adjustable.
If you want to "tighten" the latches, adjust them downwards a little.
All it takes it to loosen a couple(?) bolts that hold each latch (there's two - left and right), and push them down a little, and retighten the bolts.
