Question Strange whirring noise from clutch/tranny ?

I just noticed that, because it hasnt done it before.
For the last 4-5 days, the clutch/tranny makes this really low/faint whirring noise, which gets slightly louder when I press the clutch in. I'm talking about "have-to-really-listen-to-in-order-to-notice" level of noise, but its there...
Havent had the chance to check the oil level in the tranny, but oil was changed in the tranny just 2 months ago. Could it be anything else more serious ?
Any ideas ?

Hmm, clutch in & noise louder - it's not the tranny. Maybe the throwout bearing or pilot bearing?

Clutch and all bearings were replaced 2 weeks after I got the Rex (old clutch was slipping pretty badly). This was 6 months ago
I have a bad 5th gear synchro, but that does not warrant a clutch/trans drop in order to replace and check bearings.
Thing is I want to know if it could be anything more serious, i.e something that needs to be taken care of immediately....

yeah, it's most likely the bearing. mine has been doing that for several thousand miles so i think i know what you are talking about.

unless you are planning on getting a better clutch or a lighter flywheel then it's not going to be to your advantage to go in there and replace the bearing. It's just one of those things you can live with.

Try this, and let us know.

At a stop, tranny in neutral.
Clutch in, hold in, listen
Clutch out, stay off it, listen

Does it make noise while the clutch pedal is depressed? If so, throwout bearing. They could have done a bad job on the install. It happens..

I have the same problem with my 86 FC. It only does in 1st-3rd gear though, and the sound stops when i push the clutch in. Does anyone know what that could be? Thanks, Craig

I have same problem...it is the throwout bearing, so throw it out and get a new set of bearings!

Mine sounds like a faint chirping noise. But only when I depress the clutch to shift into second gear, and only when she is cold.

Pilot bearing test:
let the car idle at normal temperature, with the clutch engaged and the shifter in neutral position does it make the noise? if yes then its the pilot bearing. If it makes the noise when you disengage the clutch, it is not the pilot bearing, either a worn pressure plate or throw out bearing

Well, after "testing" some more, I found this: when the clutch is engaged (out) there is this very faint noise (very faint, maybe it is supposed to be there, but I havent noticed it before). But when I depress the clutch and disengage, the noise becomes much more noticeable (and then I can determine that its a "whirring" noise).

I too suppose that its a bearing (dont know which one though), but could they have done such a bad job that after just 8K km the bearing is "bad" again ?

Or maybe.....they didnt change the bearing at all

Either that or they did a really crappy job on the install.

You are probably OK.
Clutch out in neutral - faint wirring is normal gear sound on a 10 year old tranny. The throwout and pilot bearings are static.
Clutch in should make almost no sound. Only the throwout & pilot bearings are spinning. If your noise gets louder here, you may have to go into it.

Why has nobody mentioned to check fluid level in tranny? Just because it was worked on 2 months ago does not mean it couldnt be low on fluid.
My brother in law ignored the sound until it was too late and when I drained his fluid I had myself a silver river...

Hey Storm. I presume you refilled it with synthetic gear oil. I seriously hurt my tranny almost two years ago. The synthetic lube has kept me going.
